Buccaneers have put themselves in real tough spot

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers had a golden chance to beat the lowly Los Angeles Rams and move to 2-1, alone at the top of the NFC South standings. They didn’t, and they find themselves at 1-2.

So the Buccaneers don’t look much different than last year. They’ve very talented but aren’t going to be a powerhouse in the NFC. This isn’t the year for them to take off.

And with their loss to the Rams, the Bucs are in a real tough spot. They have to host the 3-0 defending Super Bowl champion Denver Broncos on Sunday. That team only has the best defense in the NFL. Maybe the best in history.

After that comes a visit to the Carolina Panthers before a bye week. Games against the Kansas City Chiefs, Seattle Seahawks and Dallas Cowboys come between Weeks 11 and 15. Oh boy.

In other words, the Buccaneers are in a real tough situation. When you have a tough schedule, you can’t assume your team will lose every game. But the Buccaneers have proven they’re not contenders up to this point. Their defense isn’t going to be as great as expected and Jameis Winston has to take more care of the football.

Perhaps the NFC South winner will have a losing record like the 7-8-1 Carolina Panthers. Perhaps Tampa Bay goes 7-9 and wins the NFC South. But it’ll likely take double-digit wins. But given their inability to beat the mediocre Rams, it’s hard to envision them getting through this tough schedule.
