Bryan Harsin promotes Auburn football assistant coach Jeff Schmedding to defensive coordinator

AUBURN — After the departure of defensive coordinator Derek Mason, Auburn football is promoting assistant coach Jeff Schmedding to the role, a source familiar with the situation confirmed to the Montgomery Advertiser.

Schmedding was the Tigers' linebackers coach and defensive run game coordinator in 2021. He came to Auburn with head coach Bryan Harsin from Boise State, where he was Harsin's defensive coordinator the previous two seasons. He spent 2004-18 at Eastern Washington, winning an FCS championship in 2010.

Boise State's defense allowed an average of 21.86 points per game, 234 passing yards and 113 rushing yards in 2019, en route to a 12-2 season. The next year, opponents scored 27.14 points per game while averaging 164 rushing yards and 210 passing yards.

Schmedding replaces Mason, who is leaving the program.

In 2021, the Tigers (6-7) allowed 21.77 points per game. They ranked No. 22 in the country and No. 3 in the SEC in rushing defense with 3.55 yards allowed per carry. Opponents averaged 7.1 yards per pass attempt and 245.8 per game.
