Browns hiring Andy Dickerson as offensive line coach after Bill Callahan's departure

BEREA — The Browns have found their replacement for outgoing offensive line coach Bill Callahan. It wasn't, however, Callahan's prized pupil.

A league source confirmed Wednesday former Seattle Seahawks offensive line coach Andy Dickerson will be hired as the Browns' new offensive line coach. MMQB's Albert Breer was the first to report.

Former Philadelphia Eagles assistant offensive line coach Roy Istvan will be hired as Dickerson's assistant offensive line coach while Jonathan Decoster will remain as another assistant line coach, a source confirmed. The Associated Press' Tom Withers was the first to report.

Callahan is going to the Tennessee Titans, where he'll join the staff of his son Brian, who was hired to replace Mike Vrabel as Titans head coach earlier this month.

Dickerson's hiring came shortly after a source confirmed that Scott Peters will join the New England Patriots as their offensive line coach. Peters had spent the last four seasons as the Browns' assistant offensive line coach.

Ken Dorsey was hired as the Browns' new offensive coordinator and officially introduced Monday. That same day, the Browns also announced three other new staff members: Duce Staley (running backs coach), Tommy Rees (tight ends coach/pass game specialist) and Jacques Cesaire (defensive line coach).

A former Browns assistant under Eric Mangini, Dickerson originally interviewed last month for the team's offensive coordinator vacancy. He was a defensive quality control coach in 2009 for Mangini, before becoming the assistant offensive line coach in 2010.

Mangini and Dickerson first connected during their time together with the New England Patriots. Dickerson was an operations intern in 2004-05.

Dickerson has spent the last two seasons as the offensive line coach for the Seahawks, who fired head coach Pete Carroll last month. In 2021, his first season in Seattle, he was the offensive run game coordinator.

From 2012-20, Dickerson served as the assistant offensive line coach for the Rams, first in St. Louis and then in Los Angeles. He also has two stops with the New York Jets, in 2006-08 as a defensive quality control assistant and in 2011 as a coaches assistant.

Peters had been viewed as a potential replacement for Callahan. The 45-year-old Peters' only NFL coaching experience has been spent under the veteran line coach during their time together in Cleveland.

"I'm just very fortunate to work with Bill," Peters said last June after Browns minicamp. "I mean, Bill's got all that knowledge and experience and just everything about him is just the highest level. And so he knows that when I got here I brought certain unique trait in terms of the technique for hand skills. So he's really always open to that. So it's been a great situation. I really look up to Bill and we've got a great rapport and I think a great team here with the guys and I just couldn't be happier about that."

New Patriots coach Jerod Mayo has turned to a number of former Browns assistants to fill out his offensive staff. Former Browns offensive coordinator Alex Van Pelt was hired to that same role last week, while T.C. McCartney, who was the tight ends coach the last two seasons in Cleveland, was hired Wednesday to be the New England quarterbacks coach.
