Brophy Prep football outmuscles Chaparral after early struggles

Brophy Prep is going to be as big, deep and talented as anyone they face, and Thursday night, they convinced visiting Chaparral of just that.

But the Broncos (3-1) smoothed out some early wrinkles and rolled to a 37-20 win. Harrison Chambers stepped up with a big game running the ball and Charlie McGinnis did the same throwing it as the Broncos controlled the line of scrimmage on both sides of the ball.

Key plays

If it wasn't the defense predicating things for Brophy, it was the offensive line and Chambers.

The Broncos, trailing 6-3 in the second quarter, got untracked after a short punt gave them field position. Six plays later they had a lead they would not give back, as McGinnis hit Christian Camarata for a 32-yard score and a 10-6 lead.

Brophy wrapped up the half with two quick, demoralizing scores. Chambers finished off a 9-play, 68-yard drive with a 4-yard run. Two minutes later, after a Cree Thomas pick, McGinnis hit Nathan Benzie for a 32-yard score and a 24-6 halftime lead.

Brophy put the dagger in as the third quarter wound down. Pinned deep after Marion Colbert's pick at the 2, Chambers rescued them with a 61-yard dart that keyed a 98-yard drive, which Chambers finished from the 3 for a 31-12 lead.

Key players

McGinnis finished 15 of 25 for 177 and forget the two picks, because his defense erased them.

Chambers had 165 rushing and 2 TDs, including the backbreaking 61-yarder.

Noah Hubbard and Devan Kennedy kept Chaparral sophomore QB Marcel Jones uncomfortable and harassed him into a difficult night.

Connor Furey chipped in two impressive field goals, from distance.

Chaparral's Hunter Wohland had 7 receptions and Plas Johnson played through an injury, making a sharp TD catch and rushing for 62 yards.

Key quotes

Head coach Jason Jewell was impressed with his Broncos' grit and toughness.

"We returned a bunch of players and we resemble a 6A team," he said. "I feel good about us," he added, noting how tough Chambers ran all night.

Chaparral is young, meanwhile, and it showed. "Too many mistakes," said coach Doug Nisenson. His young quarterback, Marcel Jones, struggled through a tough night.

But Brophy had a lot to do with that. "It's tough when you have pressure in your face right away."
