Broncos LB Mays likely done for year
Denver Broncos middle linebacker Joe Mays is expected to be out for the remainder of the year with a fractured fibula near the ankle, the Denver Post reported Monday.
The injury occured during the fourth quarter of the Broncos' 34-14 rout of the New Orleans Saints on Sunday night.
Mays was blindsided by an apparently inadvertent leg whip from a Saints player while blocking on a punt return.
Ever since signing a three-year, $12 million contract in March that pays him $4.5 million this year, things have gone downhill for Mays.
He started off the season as the Broncos starting middle linebacker, but eventually lost his job to Keith Brooking. In the last two games, he has been limited to special teams duties.
In the third game of the season, Mays was fined $50,000 and suspended a game for a hit against Houston Texans quarterback Matt Schaub.
Denver is expected to make a roster move Monday or Tuesday. Middle linebacker Mike Mohamed is an option on the practice squad.
Also, the second of D.J. Williams' two suspensions ends in two weeks. He was disciplined a total of nine games for failing the league's performance enhancement drug test and then for violating its substance-abuse policy following an alcohol-related conviction.
