Brian Wheatley wins Coach of the Year at Sarasota, Manatee, and Charlotte High School Sports Awards

Brian Wheatley, the girls volleyball coach at Venice High School, was named the Sarasota Ford Coach of the Year Wednesday at the Sarasota, Manatee, and Charlotte High School Sports Awards.

The show was produced with support from Lakewood Ranch and Sarasota Ford.

Other finalists were Andrew Eckhart of Sarasota High School and Terri Leap of Riverview High School.

Wheatley led the Venice volleyball team to a 22-4 finish this season, and the team’s sixth state championship in program history, its first since 2017. In 29 years at the helm, Wheatley has a 699-196 record. In December, he was named the Florida Dairy Farmers Florida Coach of the Year.

Wheatley has been voted 12 times the Sarasota Herald Tribune "Coach of the Year.” Voted into the Florida High School Hall of Fame in 2018, and the USA Volleyball Florida Region Hall of Fame in 2019. Wheatley’s teams have claimed 27 district titles - 21 in a row - 14 regional titles, 13 Final Four berths, and two state runners-up. He is also a member of the USA Volleyball Florida Region Hall of Fame, and is the youngest inductee into the Venice Sports Hall of Fame.
