Bretman Rock wants to redeem himself after viral pole dancing mishap

Bretman Rock just spilled on which artist he would love to choreograph a pole dancing routine for.

During an interview with NextShark on the red carpet of the 20th Unforgettable Gala in Beverly Hills on Saturday, Rock was given a list of Asian artists to choose from, such as: Jhené Aiko, BLACKPINK, BTS, Olivia Rodrigo, Rich Brian, Bruno Mars, H.E.R. and NIKI.

“I hate y’all. I would say, as much as I want to say Jhené Aiko, she just gave birth so I can't be having her on a pole” Rock said.

“Because it brings me back to this one video I made that went viral, I would say Bruno Mars,” he ultimately decided. “I would dance to ‘Leave the Door Open,’ but this time I hope the pole doesn't fall off. I don't know if you saw that video…but girl, I really flew off.”

The video he is referring to is from back in May 2021, where Rock attempts his own pole dance to Mars' and Anderson .Paak's “Leave the Door Open,” spinning on a pole before it snaps and breaks, leaving Rock bewildered.

It is that kind of content and more that has made Rock a social media star. He was an honoree of the Unforgettable Gala that evening for the Digital Influencer Award, which was presented by influencers Michelle Phan and Bella Poarch.

In his acceptance speech, Rock paid homage to other content creators at the gala that evening, including WongFu Productions and Jason Y. Lee of Jubilee Media.

“It wasn’t until I actually logged in on YouTube, and I genuinely saw other Asians, and I actually saw myself,” he said.

“It really wasn’t until Michelle Phan — all I ever really saw in the beauty industry was really pioneered by an Asian woman. But I also saw Ryan Higa making videos, and I wanted to be on Wong Fu Productions so bad, and I was on Jubilee, and it’s really so weird getting this award after Jason. All of that just to say, how grateful I am, my generation having so many options when it comes to expressing ourselves… our possibilities are endless.”

Aside from online content creation, Rock is slated to release his first memoir, “You're That Bitch & Other Cute Lessons About Being Unapologetically Yourself,” on Feb. 14, 2023.

In related Unforgettable Gala news, Simu Liu revealed his BLACKPINK bias to NextShark and “Partner Track” stars Desmond Chiam and Rich Ting shared what their characters would have had in store for Season 2.
