Breaking down Ravens’ initial 53-man roster of 2023

The Baltimore Ravens released the team’s initial 53-man roster for 2023 after making final cuts on Tuesday afternoon.

The team kept 25 players on offense, 25 players on defense and three specialists.

Roster cuts are fluid and as the team works towards the season opener against Houston, Baltimore is likely to make at least one roster move (and maybe more) on Wednesday.

Here’s a breakdown of the Ravens’ initial 53-man roster, position by position:

QB (2)

On roster: Lamar Jackson, Tyler Huntley
Cut: Josh Johnson, Anthony Brown

No surprises here, as Baltimore stuck with Huntley, and will look to get the veteran Johnson or Brown on the practice squad.

RB (5)

On roster: J.K. Dobbins, Gus Edwards, Justice Hill, Keaton Mitchell, Patrick Ricard
Cut: Melvin Gordon III, Owen Wright

The competition came down to Gordon and the rookie Keaton Mitchell, with the former ECU running back earning the job.

WR (6)

On roster: Odell Beckham Jr., Zay Flowers, Rashod Bateman, Devin Duvernay, Nelson Agholor, Tylan Wallace

Cut: Tarik Black, James Proche, Dontay Demus

Baltimore went with six wide receivers, rewarding Tylan Wallace for his strong training camp.

TE (3)

On roster: Mark Andrews, Isaiah Likely, Charlie Kolar

Cut: Travis Vokolek

Vokolek played well, but Baltimore went with what’s been working.

OL (9)

On roster: Ronnie Stanley, John Simpson, Tyler Linderbaum, Kevin Zeitler, Morgan Moses, Patrick Mekari, Daniel Faalele, Ben Cleveland, Sala Aumavae-Laulu

Cut: Tashawn Manning,Jaylon Thomas, David Sharpe, Sam Mustipher

Things stayed according to plan, with the Ravens choosing 3rd round pick Ben Cleveland over Sam Mustipher.

D-Line (4)

Cut: DT Angelo Blackson, DE Brent Urban, DT Rayshad Nichols

OLB (5)

On roster: Odafe Oweh, David Ojabo, Jadeveon Clowney, Tavius Robinson, Malik Hamm

Cut:OLB Jeremiah Moon, LB Kristian Welch, LB Josh Ross

Clowney’s addition cost Moon a roster spot, while Baltimore went with the undrafted rookie Malik Hamm over Welch and Ross.

On roster: Roquan Smith, Patrick Queen, Malik Harrison, Trenton Simpson, Del’Shawn Phillips

CB (7

On roster: Marlon Humphrey, Rock Ya-Sin, Ronald Darby, Brandon Stephens, Jalyn Armour-Davis, Arthur Maulet, Damarion “Pepe” Williams

Baltimore chose Arthur Maulet, over rookie draft pick Kyu Kelly. ‘Pepe’ Williams will miss time after making the roster.
