Breaking down new Dolphins LB David Long’s contract
With new defensive coordinator Vic Fangio locked into place for the Miami Dolphins, general manager Chris Grier addressed the defensive roster early in free agency.
One of the first moves that the team made was signing former Tennesee Titans linebacker David Long.
According to Over the Cap, Long and the Dolphins agreed to a two-year contract worth $10 million.
In 2023, he’ll make $1.08 million in base salary (fully guaranteed) and $2.21 million in a prorated signing bonus. His cap number for the year is $3.29 million.
The following year, he’s set to make $4.5 million in base salary (none guaranteed) with $2.21 million in a prorated signing bonus. The cap hit for 2024 is set at $6.71 million.
Those numbers are more than fair for a player of his caliber. He’ll likely slide into a starting role alongside Jerome Baker, allowing Channing Tindall to ease into a rotation in his second season in the NFL.
If Miami were to move on from Long prior to the 2024 season, they could save $4.5 million and be left with only $2.21 million in dead cap. However, that may not be enough to warrant trading or releasing the linebacker strictly for cap purposes.
