Brandon Marshall was drafted by the Denver Broncos in the fourth round of the 2006 NFL Draft. He’s played for the Broncos, Miami Dolphins, Chicago Bears, and the New York Jets.

Marshall changed teams (but not stadiums) when he signed with the New York Giants as a free agent. He is hoping to accomplish what he’s been unable to do despite having 12,061 receiving yards and 82 touchdowns: win the Super Bowl.

Marshall has it all mapped out. He wants to play for two more years, win a Super Bowl, and retire. The Super Bowl victory is a tall order for anyone but it’s especially arduous for a player has never been in the postseason.

Marshall is getting acclimated to his new teammates and coaches. He has spoken on the record about the Giants organization and how it factored into his decision to sign with Big Blue. Marshall is impressed with his new head coach, Ben McAdoo.

“I would say Coach McAdoo is really progressive. He’s really progressive and he does a lot of things different, in a good way, than most coaches and places in the NFL,” he said at the Giants/NBC4 Health and Fitness Expo. “The scheduling, mental fitness, very progressive. It makes a lot of sense what Coach is doing, the program that he’s put together.”

McAdoo’s way of coaching is a direct contrast to the old school approach of his predecessor, Tom Coughlin.

McAdoo gives his players a Monday off-day. He schedules practices and meetings in such a way that it encourages players to get enough rest. McAdoo tailors his practices and meetings to keep his mostly millennial team engaged. The team has also hired a nutritionist for the upcoming season.

“I’ve only been in the building a couple of weeks, but the only thing I can say about the eating is the food is amazing,” Marshall said. “The chefs are good. When it comes to nutrition, it’s one of the best (programs) I’ve been around. Mental fitness is almost nonexistent in the NFL and this is a big discussion with Coach McAdoo. Our strength and conditioning coaches are awesome, the locker room is great.”

Mental fitness is especially important to Marshall. He was diagnosed with borderline personality disorder in 2010. Marshall addressed a crowd of Giants fans at the expo on behalf of his organization Project 375, which works to raise awareness and improve care for individuals affected by mental illness. Marshall has been an advocate since his diagnosis.

“I’ve always been comfortable standing on the front line,” he said. “When I was at McLean Hospital (the hospital where he received his diagnosis and treatment in Belmont, Mass.), I realized how important this discussion was. I wanted to be one of the voices and faces to it. So it was only right. I just wanted to do my part in the community.”
