Boys basketball: Summerfield, Flat Rock, SMCC, Jefferson, Huron win

OTTAWA LAKE – Summerfield had an answer for Whiteford every step of the way Friday in beating the Bobcats 60-49.

The Bulldogs led 26-17 after the first quarter and took a four-point lead into halftime. The Bobcats made it a 5-point game on a triple by Josh Hill early in the third quarter, but a driving layup and three-point play by Teddy Gault put the Bulldogs up eight again.

Hill again cut it to a five-point game at 45-40 with 2:48 left in the third quarter but a bucket by Jha Jha Hornbeak made it 46-40 going into the fourth quarter and the Bulldogs started the final period with a bucket by Brenden Myshock and a 3-pointer from the corner by Tyler Dafoe to go up nine with 7:07 left.

The closest the Bobcats would get the rest of the way was 8 points.

Gault and Dafoe scored 13 points each for Summerfield while Brody St. John tossed in 11 and Myshock 10 for the 14-3 Bulldogs. Hornbeak had 7 rebounds, 3 steals and 4 assists.

Summerfield, which came into the game ranked No. 10 in the Associated Press Division 4 poll, swept the season series with Whiteford for the first time since the 2019-20 season.

"Huge win for our young pups," Summerfield coach Phil Schiffler said. " To go into a hostile environment, your rival, and win for the second time against them this year is huge. This was a great team win."

Whiteford was led by Ryin Ruddy’s 14 points. Hill and Kolby Masserant scored 11 points each.

The Bobcats are 11-7 overall and 6-4 in the TCC.

Flat Rock 62, Airport 56

CARLETON – Flat Rock had to set aside the emotion of Tuesday’s victory over Jefferson when the Rams set a trio of school records.

“Our team did a good job weathering the storm in the first half when Airport made seven 3s.” Flat Rock coach Rick Smith said. “I’m super proud of our entire team for how hard they’ve been working in practice and making each other better.”

Graham Junge, coming off school records of 47 points and 14 3-pointers Tuesday, led the 14-3 Rams with 18 points. Flat Rock also was strong inside as Tim Murphy racked up 16 points and Alex Gillum pulled down 13 rebounds.

Cooper Nye led Airport (9-8) with 13 points and 14 rebounds while Colin Nowak added 11 points and Aidyn Stahr 10.

Airport had the misfortune to play the undefeated Huron League leaders in its Coming Home game.

“We knew it was going to be a tough game and that guys would have to step up for us for it to be a contest,” Jets’ coach Jason Ruhlig said. “Our guys did just that.  We got critical minutes from guys coming off the bench for us.”

Flat Rock won the junior varsity game 52-33 behind 25 points and 7 rebounds and also ruled the freshman game 54-15 as Jaxone Faraone netted 17 points and 4 steals.

SMCC 55, Riverview 49

MONROE – St Mary Catholic Central took a 13-point lead into the half, and then successfully fended off a second half surge by Riverview.

Drew Vuich helped extend the lead early in the third quarter knocking down two 3-pointers that pushed the Falcon advantage to 16 points.

SMCC coach Randy Windham said Vuich’s buckets allowed the team to hold on during the late push by Riverview.

Buddy Snodgrass led the Falcons with 14 points and Brady Hines chipped in 10.

Jefferson 69, Milan 54

MILAN – Milan erased a 7-point deficit after the opening period to pull within a single point before the intermission, 27-26, but the Jefferson defense clamped down when it mattered most.

The Bears defense held the Big Reds to just 8 points in the final period, while the offense dropped 42 points in the second half.

“Defense led the Bears to a good league win on the road,” Jefferson coach Corey Wiley said.

Trey Oldenburg caught fire after the break scoring 16 of his 18 points in the second half and Ben Merkel poured in 17 points for the 8-7 Bears.

Grant Segrist hit 15 points to lead Milan (2-13).

"Credit Jefferson for finishing at the line in the fourth," Milan coach Bobby Green said. "They stayed aggressive going to the rim in the fourth quarter. I thought we competed hard tonight."

Ann Arbor Huron 65, Monroe 29

MONROE – Monroe had no answers for the No. 10 team in the Associated Press Division 1 state rankings.

“To sum it up, they are really, really good,” Monroe coach Larry Middleton said.

Lucis Rzepa scored 12 points to lead the 4-10 Trojans.

Ann Arbor Skyline 52, Bedford 44

TEMPERANCE – Bedford continues to search for its first league win.

“We lost to them by 37 last time,” Bedford coach Jordan Bollin said. “It was a much better effort for us. We’re really getting better.”

The Mules trailed by 15 points, 42-27 at the start of the fourth quarter, but made a push for a comeback outscoring Skyline 17-10 in the final period but the bid came up short.

Noah Colon was the leading scorer for Bedford (2-12) with 8 points.

Huron 47, Grosse Ile 35

NEW BOSTON – New Boston Huron struggled to find a rhythm, but managed to pull out a win.

The Chiefs pulled away in the final quarter outscoring Grosse Ile 19-8; including 8-for-9 from the free-throw line down the stretch.

“We stayed patient and eventually came out on top,” Huron coach Ted Tackett said.

Kyle Kentola (13 points, 10 rebounds) and Chad Martin (13 points, 10 rebounds) each notched double-doubles for Huron (10-5).

Adrian Madison 63, Dundee 54

DUNDEE – Dundee suffered its first Lenawee County Athletic Association loss of the season and dipped to 14-2 overall.

“Tonight was a tough game to take,” Dundee coach Jay Haselschwerdt said. “We had too many turnovers and missed too many layups. Hopefully, it was a good learning experience. We’ll see how the guys react to it.”

Ethan Layton led Dundee with 18 points. Adam Spare added 13 and Braiden Whitaker 10.

Blissfield 68, Ida 62, 3OT

BLISSFIELD – Blissfield outscored its guest 11-5 in the third overtime period.

“We came out in the first quarter playing very sloppy (6 turnovers),” Ida coach Jared Karner said. “The rest of the game was back and forth basketball, but unfortunately Blissfield won the effort battle which gave them the win.”

AJ Schrader poured in 26 points to lead the 10-5 Blue Streaks. Beck Kukiela added 10 points.

Ida’s junior varsity stands at 10-5 following a 56-51 win. Luke Hennessey (16), Hazen Vest (11) and Cole Snyder (10) all scored in double figures.

Waterford Lakecrest 58, State Line 28

TEMPERANCE – State Line Christian’s modest two-game winning streak came to an end.

“Lakecrest manhandled us tonight,” State Line coach Nathan Nash said. “They are a really well-coached team with the two best guards we have faced this year. On to the next one.”

Preston Roque and Cooper Worley scored 7 points each for the 6-11 Patriots.
