Boys basketball roundup: Stony Point, St. Michael's, others off to hot starts

The Central Texas boys basketball season is off and running with multiple teams off to hot starts.

District play will start for some schools as early as Dec. 5, while most schools will wait until Dec. 15.

Team of the first two weeks: Stony Point

While many local teams have had impressive starts to the season, the Tigersthe No. 1 team in the Statesman’s preseason poll — have gone 4-0 against a gauntlet of Westlake, San Antonio Reagan, Duncanville and Allen. While all three wins are notable, the victory over Duncanville raised some eyebrows as they hammered the Panthers 90-65.

Josiah Moseley had 33 points and 12 rebounds in that contest and is averaging 21.8 ppg and 7.8 rpg so far, while Junior Goodlet tallied 19 points vs. Allen.

Landon Short scored 19 points vs. Duncanville, Goodlet had 17 points against Reagan and Moseley finished with 17 points in the win over Westlake in other notable stats for the Tigers.

Honorable mention: St. Michael’s

The Crusaders are 7-0 with two impressive wins over the last week.

They defeated Manor 69-62 as Aiden Disu had 29 points, 15 rebounds and eight blocks and Bo Ogden added 16 points. They followed that with a 69-59 win over Rouse with both Disu and Ogden pouring in 19 points.

Lake Travis is also 7-0. Westlake is 5-3.

Player of the first two weeks: Trent Medearis, Hays

Medearis is averaging 24.6 ppg through the Hawks’ first eight games, which they are 5-3 in.

He scored 30 points in games against Akins, Richardson Pearce and La Porte.

Around the area

Leander is one of several teams off to a 4-0 start.

The Lions beat Westwood 64-54 Tuesday behind Ryder Bradley’s 24 points and Sean Dalberg’s 15 points and seven rebounds.

In Friday’s 48-34 victory against Marble Falls, Bradley had 22 points and four assists.

Leander began the year with a 64-31 win over Vista Ridge in which Bradley tallied 23 points, Dalberg had 13 points and Wilson recorded 11 points and five rebounds.

Cedar Ridge had a good week with wins over Hutto 67-63 and LBJ 71-52.

Peyton Dulin’s 22 points, six rebounds and five assists paced the Raiders vs. the Hippos, with Jaylen Bars adding 14 points and four steals and Sam Fielding recording 12 points and five assists.

Dulin again led the team with 19 points and seven rebounds in the victory vs. the Jaguars. Reese Brooks added nine points and three rebounds against LBJ.

Johnson (3-1) edged San Antonio Brandeis 78-74 on the road as Jaxson Vandegarde poured in 33 points and had nine rebounds and Sam McKinney finished with 19 points and eight boards.

Austin High is 3-5 on the year with wins over LBJ, Texas Lions and Travis.

Charlie Gaynor’s 13 points, four assists and three steals paced the Maroons against the Rebels, with Iain Mitchell grabbing eight rebounds in the win over the Jaguars.

Samir Kassam tallied at least 20 points in loses to Cinco Ranch and Dripping Springs.

Bowie improved to 4-1 with a 56-34 win over McNeil behind 22 points from Mason Wasserburger.
