Bowman County hoops teams split Monday-night road-games

Feb. 6—SOUTHWEST NORTH DAKOTA — Bowman County's basketball program has been riding high this season, and with a 57-46 win over Central McLean at the Knights of Columbus Activities Center on Monday, Feb. 5 the girls improved their season to 16-2 overall, while the boys suffered their first defeat of the year at Glen Ullin-Hebron, 62-58, to drop into second-place in Division B/Region 3-District 5 at 14-1, 7-1.

With three Bowman County athletes hitting double-digits on the night, it was another solid performance for the Bulldogs, who jumped out to a quick 30-18 lead at the half after a tense 10-10 tie in the first quarter. Reagan Honeyman was on fire as the teams approached the halftime break, draining a trio of 3-pointers in the second quarter, while senior guard Jaci Fischer notched 6 in the first 16 minutes of play.

Fischer also was steady down the stretch, scoring the other 11 points of her 17 in the second half, while Honeyman provided more sparks with another trey and scored 12 more of her game-high 21 total. Junior guard Julie Sarsland was the other Bulldog player in double-figures with 12.

Adlyn Eng led all Central McLean scorers with a team-high 13, while Harpyr Abrahamson came in with 12.

Next-up for the Bowman County girls will be their regular-season and home-finale versus Richardton-Taylor on Tuesday, Feb. 6.

It cannot be called a shock-defeat, because Glen Ullin-Hebron came into the game with a 15-1 record and a solid, 6-0 mark in Division B/Region 3-District 5, but the Bearcats, nonetheless, sent Bowman County — the #1-ranked team in Division B in North Dakota — to their first loss of the season with the home-victory on Monday night. The 'Dawgs now stand at a respectable 14-1, 7-1 and Glen Ullin-Hebron moved into first place in the district with a 16-1, 7-0 record on the 2023-24 season.

Glen Ullin-Hebron held a narrow, 16-14 lead at the end of the first quarter, and led by the same margin at the half, 31-29, in a tense opening 16 minutes. Senior guard Bohden Duffield scored all 13 of his points in the first half, and his brother, Bishop, nailed a shot from behind the arc and shot 3-of-4 from the free-throw line to post 6 points of his own.

Meanwhile, Will Mickelson was a terror for the Bearcats in the first half, scoring 12, and Landon Schaff dropped in a pair of 3s to help pace the home-team.

Bishop Duffield came out firing in the second half, scoring 11 more points, but the shooting went a little cold for the visitors, with no other player posting double-digits in the final 16 minutes. The Bulldogs scored 18 points in the third quarter but were held to only 11 in the final frame en route to the loss.

Four Glen Ullin-Hebron athletes found their way into double-figures for the home-team, with Mickelson's team-high 16, Ryan Schneider's 12, 11 from Jaxon Rolle and 10 from Riley Schneider.

Next-up for Bowman County will be a showdown at Williston Trinity Christian on Friday, Feb. 9, while the Bearcats will be headed to Flasher the same night, with both games coming in DB/R3-D5 action.
