Bouwmeester re-signs with Blues

The St. Louis Blues signed defenseman Jay Bouwmeester to a five-year, $27 million contract extension on Thursday.

Bouwmeester, who came to the Blues at the trade deadline last season from the Calgary Flames, is in the final year of an existing contract that has a cap hit of $6.88 million next season. The new deal has a $5.4 million annual salary average, the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reported.

The extension prevents the Blues from losing the 29-year-old Bouwmeester to free agency after the 2013-14 season.

In the final 14 games of the 2012-13 regular season with St. Louis, Bouwmeester had one goal and six assists. His season totals with the Blues and Flames were seven goals and 15 assists.

The Blues have yet to re-sign restricted free agent defenseman Alex Pietrangelo during the offseason. He currently is without a contract.
