Bolivar's Hayden Williams named next Humboldt football coach

Hayden Williams has taken over at Humboldt as its football coach.

Vikings’ athletic director George Yarbro announced Wednesday that Williams will lead the program after a three-year run at Bolivar.

Under Williams’ direction, the Tigers went 9-20, including a 6-4 mark in 2023 – ending the season with a 76-20 win over Liberty.

“For me it’s a family decision,” said Williams, who lives in Crockett County. “Humboldt being a 15 to 20 minute drive as opposed to my hour I was driving down to Bolivar every day. That was definitely appealing to me.”

Humboldt struggled to an 0-10 record in 2023. The Vikings haven’t had a winning season since 2016, when they went 7-5.

In taking over the program, Williams is hoping his combination of high-tempo offense and fun-loving football mindsets help bring Humboldt back to its winning ways.

“It starts with getting the community back involved with the program,” Williams said. “Getting their support back out there and getting kids to buy in because the talent is there, we have plenty of size in Humboldt. It’s just a lack of commitment and buy-in over the past few years have led (the team) astray. That’s what we’re going to try to get back.”

Williams graduated from North Side and went on to a bachelor’s degree in exercise science and physical wellness from Tennessee Tech. He is still working on a master’s degree in sport administration from Arkansas State. He was born in Russellville, Ark. and spent his childhood in Conway, Ark.

Williams took an assistant coaching position at Bolivar in 2020 before ascending to become the head coach the following season.

“At the end of it all, football is supposed to be fun for the kids,” Williams said. “That’s my big key, I want them to have fun playing the game they love to play.”
