Bogota airport delays flights as Colombia goes to extra time against England - reports

Soccer is the world’s game and the World Cup is its showpiece event. During pivotal matches like Colombia’s Round of 16 clash with England on Tuesday, it’s not an exaggeration to say entire nations grind to a halt as they awaited the outcome. Just take the example of El Dorado International Airport in Bogota, Colombia.

Social media reports indicate that the airport temporarily suspended all flights as Colombia and England’s game went to extra time. England had led for most of the second half and looked to be on its way to winning before a last-minute equalizer from Yerry Mina handed Colombia a lifeline.

As the match headed into 30 minutes of extra time, social media blew up with reports indicating that the airport had halted flights so that everyone could watch the game.

It might seem hard to believe judging by American standards, but lest we forget, soccer is literally a life and death matter in countries like Colombia. We paid a visit to the airport’s flight information page online, which confirmed that indeed, flights at the airport had been delayed on Tuesday afternoon.

Unfortunately, for the fans gathered at the airport, extra time failed to produce a winner and the match went to penalty kicks, where against the prevailing tides of history, England did the unthinkable and won.
