Bob Stoops returning to the XFL as a head coach for 2023 restart

Former Oklahoma Sooners head coach Bob Stoops is returning to the sidelines in 2023 as one of eight head coaches in the newest iteration of the XFL.

Led by Dany Garcia and Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, the league will restart in 2023 with eight teams and like he did back in 2020, Stoops will be the head coach of one of those eight teams. Joining Stoops as head coaches will be Wade Phillips, Hines Ward, Rod Woodson, Jim Haslett, Anthony Becht, Reggie Barlow, and Terrell Buckley.

The league will serve in a similar role to that of the USFL. A spring alternative for players who aren’t signed by NFL teams but want to continue to develop and have a chance to stick with an NFL roster.

Dany Garcia is the first woman to hold a majority ownership in a professional sports league. Teamed up with fellow owner Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson provides the league with a fantastic marketing duo as they look to restart the league in 2023.

Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson was asked by Mike Greenberg of ESPN’s “Get Up” what led Johnson to get involved with the XFL. The Rock said, “I would have loved to play for the XFL when I was coming out of college. Especially under this new iteration of the XFL. New ownership where we want to create a league of culture, a league of innovation. And at the end of the day, I got involved with the XFL, became an XFL owner with Dany (Garcia) to see dreams come true.”

In 2020, the Dallas Renegades went 2-3, led by former Oklahoma Sooners quarterback Landry Jones. They were 2-0 on the road and 0-3 at home during a season that was cut short due to COVID-19.

Stoops returned to the Oklahoma sidelines last December to help the Sooners through their coaching transition and guided OU to a 47-33 win over the Oregon Ducks.
