Bob Knight timeline at IU and Texas Tech

■ 1971, March: Bob Knight hired as IU’s new men’s basketball coach at age of 31 after going 102-50 as head coach of Army from 1966-71. Posts 17-8 (9-5 Big Ten) record in first season.

■ 1973: Named Big Ten Coach of the Year after 22-6 (11-3) season that ends with conference title and loss to UCLA in Final Four.

■ 1975: Knight routinely acknowledged 31-1 team that lost to Kentucky 92-90 in NCAA regional final as his best of all IU teams. Star Scott May was lost in tournament to a broken hand, Knight proclaimed national coach of the year.

■ 1976, March: Hoosier complete the most recent (to this day) perfect season NCAA men's basketball, going 32-0 and winning national championship over Michigan.

■ 1979, June: Coaches United State Pan American Games national team to gold medal. Is tried and convicted of striking a Puerto Rican policemen during the competition. Government drops extradition efforts in 1987.

■ 1980: Earns 300th career win with victory over Northwestern. Finishes 21-8 on way to another Big Ten championship and coach of the year recognition.

1981: Wins second national title with sophomore guard Isiah Thomas, beating Dean's Smith North Carolina squad, 63-50.

■ 1984: Coaches U.S. national team to the 1984 Olympic gold Medal in Los Angele. Team includes Michael Jordan and IU underclassman Steve Alford. Hoosiers upset Jordan and North Carolina in Sweet 16, but lose to Virginia in regional final.

■ 1985, Dec. 1-15: Washington Post reporter John Feinstein follows IU men's basketball team for planned book ("A Season on the Brink"). In game against Purdue, Knight is ejected and suspended for one game after throwing a chair across the court. Notches 400th career victory.

■ 1986: After going 21-8 and 13-5 in Big Ten, loses to No. 14 seed Cleveland State in first round of NCAA Tournament.

■ 1987, March: Wins his third and final national championship with a 74-73 victory over Syracuse in New Orleans on Keith Smart's memorable last-second jumper. Named Naismith coach of the year after 30-4 season.

■ 1988: Tells NBC Nightly News anchor Connie Chung, "If rape is inevitable, relax and enjoy it," then claims his quote was taken out of context.

■ 1989: Records 500th career while claiming national and Big Ten coach of the year honors.

■ 1991: Inducted into the National Basketball Hall of Game.

■ 1992: Advances to the Final Four for the fourth time, losing to Duke and protege coach Mike Krzyzewskim 81-78 in national semifinal. Tournament run includes mock "whipping" of Calbert Cheaney during NCAA West Regional.

■ 1993: Suspended after allegedly kicking son/player Patrick Knight in the leg during a game. Suspended one game.

■ 1994: Headbutts Sherron Wilkerson while sitting on the bench during a game. Claims it was unintentional.

■ 1995: Fined $30,000 by NCAA for outburst during NCAA Tournament postgame interview.

■ 1996: Dismisses player Sheron Wilkerson after Wilkerson is charged with battery.

■ 1997: Player Jason Collier transfers to Georgia Tech midseason, citing verbal abuse from Knight.

■ 1999: Accidently shoots hunting partner and is cited for failing to report incident.

■ 2000, Sept. 1-15: Knight is fired for allegedly grabbing a student by the arm after the student addressed him as "hey, Knight."

■ 2001: Is hired as head basketball coach at Texas Tech in Lubbock.

■ 2002, Sept. 1-15: Pays $25,000 to settle suit filed by Felling.

■ 2002, Nov. 1-15: Knight sues IU over firing.

■ 2003, Oct. 1-15: Oct. 7, IU wins lawsuit over firing.

■ 2007, Jan. 1-15: As Texas Tech coach, Knight becomes men's college basketball's winningest coach. Finishes coaching career with record of 763-290, a record for wins in Division I at the time.
