Boys' cross country

EVANSVILLE HARRISON DENNIS BAYS INVITATIONAL: North's Jacob Mitchell was the top runner on a preview of the regional course, winning by a second in 15:56.3. Edgewood's Zane Meyer was third (16:15) and South's Ryan Rheam fourth (16:28.7). Columbus North put seven in the top 21 to win with 52 points to 54 for North, which had five in the top 23. DANVILLE HOKUM KAREM: Lighthouse Christian had four runners. 49. Keaton Jones and Caiden Ward, 46:46.4. Boys reserve 2 mile: 11. Nathan Smith 14:31.2. Girls reserve 2 mile: 1. Taylor Helbert 14:36.

Girls' cross country

EVANSVILLE HARRISON DENNIS BAYS INVITATIONAL: South's 1-2 punch of Aurelia Martoglio and Lexi Kollbaum was just enough to help the Panthers top Columbus North by a point, 72-73. The Bull Dogs had five in the top 20 and nine in the top 30, but Martoglio (19:19.4) and Kollbaum (19:45.9), along with Linton's Peyton Smith, were the only runners to break 20 minutes at Angel Mounds. South did not have Jasmine Martoglio. Edgewood's Hannah Crain (20:40.2) was seventh and North was led by Nola Somers Glenn in 11th (20:54.6). Edgewood, which had four in the top 50, was fourth as a team (166) and North sixth (218) just a point above Castle. Complete results at OnlineRaceResults.com

Girls' golf

WESTERN INDIANA CONFERENCE: Edgewood finished third (426) at Forest Park behind host Northview (409) and Brown County (420). Owen Valley did not have a team score. BC's Lily VanNess was medalist with a 78 while Edgewood's Amara Hanson was third (98) and Ashton Sessions tied for 10th (104) to earn All-WIC.

COLUMBUS EAST INVITATIONAL: Bloomington South takes first with a 363 to win by one shot over New Albany. Melanie Southern (81) and Avery Beck (84) go 3-5 while Daphe Southern shoots a career low.

EASTERN GREENE INVITATIONAL: Barr-Reeve wins with a 370 while Eastern Greene is sixth (469) at Stonecrest. Chloe Scott led the T-Birds with 106, followed by Reece Provo (112).

Football

WASHINGTON 28, EDGEWOOD 0: Tough night for the Mustangs (1-1) as Washington rolled in the first game on their newly refurbished field. The Hatchets led 21-0 at halftime. Edgewood was limited to just 66 yards rushing and 49 passing and had to punt 10 times, but one resulted in a fumbled snap that Washington picked up and ran in for a score. BLOOMINGTON NORTH 9, BEDFORD NORTH LAWRENCE 2: Cougars (2-2-1) went up 5-0 by halftime and Joe Luther had a five-goal day. Complete stats: MaxPreps.

BLOOMINGTON SOUTH AT CASTLE: Canceled after heavy rains flooded the Knights' field.

LIGHTHOUSE CHRISTIAN 3, EASTERN GREENE 3: Lighthouse took a 3-1 lead by halftime but could not hold on as Eastern Greene (0-1-2) earned a tie. Griffin Hengeveld had two of the T-Birds' goals. Match stats at MaxPreps

NORTH PUTNAM 2, EDGEWOOD 1: WIC match went to a shootout after regulation ended in a 1-1 tie and 1A No. 18 Cougars prevailed as the Mustangs fell to 0-3, 0-2.

Girls' soccer

EDGEWOOD 3, NORTH PUTNAM 0: Emma Edwards scored twice as the Mustangs (3-0, 2-0) broke away from a scoreless tie to take the WIC contest. Macey Crider had nine saves. Match stats: MaxPreps.

BLOOMINGTON SOUTH 0, RONCALLI 0: No. 12 South (3-1-1) outshot the Royals (3-1-2) 16-6 but couldn't get one in the net.

Volleyball

SPRINGS VALLEY INVITATIONAL: Edgewood (10-2) went 3-0 in pool play before falling to the host Hawks, 25-19, 25-8 in the championship match. The Mustangs opened with a 25-19, 25-17 win over Vincennes Rivet, then beat Hancock County (Ky.) 25-6, 25-5 and North Daviess 25-14, 25-7. Complete match stats at MaxPreps.

BROWNSTOWN CENTRAL INVITATIONAL: Bloomington South (5-7) went 2-2 on the day, opening with losses for Jasper, 25-21, 25-17 and an epic 25-16, 35-33 defeat to Trinity Lutheran. The Panthers bounced back to top Seymour 25-17, 16-25, 15-12 and East Central, 25-21, 25-9.

LIGHTHOUSE CHRISTIAN 3, CANNELLTON 0: The Lions (4-2, 2-0) pick up a Southern Roads Conference win with a 25-10, 25-20, 25-14 sweep. Claire Beretta had four aces and 28 asssists. Emilee Spurlock had 10 kills and Marissa Webb seven.

Boys' tennis

EDGEWOOD SWEEPS: The Mustangs picked up two WIC wins, beating West Vigo 5-0 and Northview 4-1.

NORTH CENTRAL JOHN SHIRLEY TOURNAMENT: No. 19 South finished fourth behind No. 6 Guerin Catholic, No. 7 Cathedral and No. 26 Fort Wayne Carroll in the Buckley Division. Alex Busch was the No. 3 singles champion while William Liao and Abe Corry had to battle through two two-hour long matches and lost only to the eventual champs to take fourth.

Friday, Aug. 25

Football

BLOOMINGTON SOUTH 35, MARTINSVILLE 6: Jarrin Alley threw three touchdown passes and ran in two more scores to lead the Panthers (2-0). Alley finished 13-of-15 for 214 yards. Lucas Waldon had four catches for 98 yards and a TD. South was dominating on defense, holding the Arties' Brayden Schrake to 62 yards on 29 carries. Martinsville quarterback AJ Reynolds threw for 204 yards.

NORTH KNOX 25, EASTERN GREENE 20: Just like last week, a fumble in the fourth quarter came back to bite the T-Birds (0-2), allowing North Knox to score the go-ahead points with just under 10 minutes left. Eastern came up short on fourth down after getting inside the 20 in the final minute.

SOUTH PUTNAM 46, OWEN VALLEY 6: The No. 5 team in 1A ran out to a 33-0 lead by halftime. The Eagles threw for 187 yards and ran for 162 while the defense recorded seven sacks.

Volleyball

LIGHTHOUSE CHRISTIAN 3, CROTHERSVILLE 0: Lions reversed a sweep from last season with a 25-22, 25-11, 25-23 win. Emilee Spurlock had five aces and 10 kills; Ava Fritz 14 digs and Marissa Webb nine kills.

EDGEWOOD 3, BEDFORD NORTH LAWRENCE 0: Mustangs (6-0) are off to their best start in more than 20 years after a 25-23, 25-23, 25-16 win.

NORTH CENTRAL 3, LIGHTHOUSE CHRISTIAN 2: Lions hang tough against a possible sectional opponent before falling, 17-25, 25-22, 25-10, 24-26, 15-10. Emilee Spurlock 10 kills for LCA, Marissa Webb 12 kills, 4 blocks; Faith Rasmusen 4 aces; Jane Holdeman 12 digs.

EASTERN GREENE 3, WHITE RIVER VALLEY 0: T-Birds win SWIAC contest, 25-17, 25-21, 25-19.

Boys' soccer

BLOOMINGTON SOUTH 5, BEDFORD NORTH LAWRENCE 0: Joe DiGiorgio 2 goals, with 1 each for Landon Ryner, Etienne Leykin and Tom Henry Berry. Daniel Panfilov in net for No. 14 Panthers (3-1). Up next, trip to No. 15 Castle on Saturday.
