The weather in Pyeongchang, 2018 Games site, is delightfully wintry
In Sochi, temperatures are soaring north of 60 degrees, and even the mountain venues are well warmer than freezing. In Pyeongchang, site of the 2018 Winter Olympics, meanwhile, there's snow everywhere.
"It's a winter sports games - there should be snow everywhere," Kim Yong-Woon, a former South Korean ski team member, told the AP. "Pyeongchang is the best when it comes to weather. It snowed heavily this week, and we're expecting more." Kim, along with several other representatives from Pyeongchang, has been visiting Sochi to see what's being done well, and what organizers can learn.

Pyeongchang is a small city of about 43,000, located about three hours east of Seoul. It has the look and feel of a traditional Alpine ski resort, a sharp contrast from the waterfront-and-palm-trees of Sochi. And there's plenty of snow. Temperatures this weekend run from a low of 1 degree Fahrenheit to a high of only about 39 degrees.
Pyeongchang had bid for the Winter Games in 2010 and 2014, but lost to Vancouver and Sochi, respectively. It is the first ski resort to host a Games since Albertville, France in 1992, and marks the third time (after Japan's Sapporo in 1972 and Nagano in 1998) that an Asian city wil host the Winter Games. Pyeongchang won the games in July 2011, beating out Annecy, France and Munich, Germany.
At this year's Closing Ceremony, Sochi will honor Pyeongchang, and then, Pyeongchang will be on the four-year clock.
