Reto Berra scores goal, puts skaters’ celebrations to shame (Video)

Before Friday night, there had only been 10 goals scored by a goaltender in the 79-year history of the American Hockey League.

Well, Lake Erie Monsters goalie Reto Berra turned that up to 11 … and then celebrated rather gloriously.

With Chicago Wolves goaltender Matt Climie on the bench and Lake Erie leading 3-1, Berra collected a dump-in from center ice, turned it around and fired it down ice. It went into the net, dead-center, giving the Monsters a 4-1 lead at 18:34 of the third.

(Although 11 goalies have scored goals, Berra becomes only the seventh to actually shoot the puck into the opposing net.)

What came next was so goalie-goofy: Berra skating over to the Monsters bench to tap gloves with his teammates before bumping into a Wolves player on the way back to his crease, sending Berra into an arms-stretched “WHAT?! WHAT?! I JUST SCORED ON YOU THAT’S WHAT!” pose.

It was Berra’s first appearance with the team in an injury rehab stint from the Colorado Avalanche. He stopped 20 of 21 shots for the win.

So congrats, Reto Berra, for joining the likes of Darcy Wakaluk, Robb Stauber, Antero Niittymaki, Chris Mason and … some other guys in scoring goals in the AHL.
