Calgary Flames to hire Brad Treliving as new general manager
First, let's get to the best part for the Calgary Flames in their hiring of Brad Treliving: his dad owns Boston Pizza, so free pies for everyone.
On Monday, the Flames are expected to introduce Treliving as their new general manager, according to TSN's Bob McKenzie, replacing Brian Burke, who handled the duties after Jay Feaster's dismissal in December.
Sportsnet's Nick Kypreos Tweeted that Treliving was the only person who interviewed for the Flames' gig.
From the day Feaster was let go, Burke said he did not want to be the team's general manager and was happy with his role as President of Hockey Operations. Back in December, he wasn't sounding like a man who wasn't interested in looking over his new GMs shoulder ever day.
“I think the general manager is the most important position in the organization. It really is,” Burke said. “It’s the nerve centre of the organization. It’s where most of the critical, long-term decisions are made."
We'll see how long that lasts.
This is Trelving's first NHL GM job. He's been the Phoenix Coyotes assistant GM for the past seven years where he's handled the scouting staff and been the GM for the club's AHL affiliate in Portland.
What can the Flames expect out of him?
Via Craig Custance of ESPN in November:
"Crazy work ethic," Tippett said of the Coyotes assistant GM. "His commitment to doing the job right is phenomenal. Sometimes you just scratch your head and say, 'Brad, take a break here.' He’s all-in all the time."
Treliving faces a summer where he holds the no. 4 overall pick in June's entry draft and is currently committed to 19 players and just over $43 million in salary heading into next season, according to CapGeek.
There's a ton of young players to work with and the Flames played good hockey as they closed out the season. Finding the pieces to fit around them and turn the franchise around will be the tough part as Treliving takes over.
