During the season last year, we wrote often about the cool relationship that formed between the Michigan State Spartans and Atlanta rapper Rich Homie Quan.

After being introduced to the song by All-American corner back and Georgia native Darqueze Dennard, the team loved dancing to Quan’s song, “Type of Way,” after wins. Head coach Mark Dantonio even shouted him out after the team knocked off Ohio State in the Big Ten title game.

Naturally, Quan was invited out to California for the team’s Rose Bowl matchup with Stanford and, after hopping a flight after his concert in Charlotte, N.C., he cheered the Spartans on to a big win for the program. He was also there with the team in the locker room to celebrate after the win.

Sports Illustrated caught up with Quan at SXSW in Austin, Texas last month and he detailed how the relationship grew and how he’s become Michigan State’s “second mascot.”
