Colorado, Kansas State and Tennessee decide on starting quarterbacks
There are still a lot of publicly unsettled situations at quarterback as we enter the first week of the college football season, but a few teams have made announcements about who will be under center for their teams' first snap in 2013.
Kansas State coach Bill Snyder said that JuCo transfer Jake Waters would be the team's starting quarterback against North Dakota State on Friday night. Waters was a JuCo All-American last season and beat out Daniel Sams, a sophomore, for the starting job. Snyder said that Sams had missed some time late in practice, though he'll also see time at quarterback Friday night.
At Tennessee, Justin Worley will be Tyler Bray's successor. Worley, a junior, beat out three others for the right to be Butch Jones' first starting QB at Tennessee. Worley was competing with Nathan Peterman, a redshirt freshman and Riley Ferguson and Josh Dobbs, both true freshmen.
Colorado's starting quarterback will be Connor Wood. Wood transferred from Texas following the 2011 season and will be running the Buffs' new pistol offense under Mike MacIntyre. Wood's backup will be true freshman Sefo Liufau.
On the other end of the spectrum are teams like Penn State, Texas Tech, TCU and West Virginia. The Nittany Lions' final depth chart was released Monday with both Christian Hackenberg and Tyler Ferguson as options to start at QB.
Tech coach Kliff Kingsbury hedged when asked if Davis Webb or Baker Mayfield will be his starting quarterback against SMU. TCU coach Gary Patterson revealed that both Trevone Boykin and Casey Pachall will play against LSU and that they both will be team captains. However, he was coy about revealing what that plan would be. West Virginia coach Dana Holgorsen said that his starting quarterback competition is down to between Clint Trickett and Paul Millard and that if the Mountaineers' game was Tuesday, both quarterbacks would play.
