Auburn DB Jonathon Mincy arrested for pot two days after speaking at D.A.R.E. event

Friday, Auburn's Jonathon Mincy was arrested for pot possession. By itself, it's notable. But when combined with what Mincy did earlier in the week, it's hypocritical.

According to the Dothan Eagle, Mincy was the passenger in the back seat of a car pulled over for speeding Friday night.

“It was a routine stop on 431 near Great Southern Wood in Abbeville of a car doing 92 in a 65,” Henry County Sheriff William Maddox told the Dothan Eagle. “The officer went to the car and smelled marijuana. There were two males and two females in the car and one of the males had shake all over his shirt sitting in the car in the back and there was a bag of marijuana near him. That person happened to be Jonathon Mincy of the Auburn football team.”

After he was arrested for marijuana possession, Mincy posted a $3,000 bond. He had 56 tackles and started every game at safety for Auburn last season.

Wednesday, Mincy spoke to students as part of a D.A.R.E. event.

If you're a child (or had a child) of the 1980s, 1990s or 2000s, you likely remember D.A.R.E., the school program to educate kids about drugs and violence and peer pressure. (The cold shoulder technique was our favorite.) The message is simple: don't do drugs.

Yes, there have been questions about the effectiveness of the program throughout the years, but that doesn't make Mincy's arrest any less contradictory. Kids, do as he says and not as he does.
