Jon Gruden checks in on brother, Jay, at Washington Redskins' camp

A week after hosting actor Matthew McConaughey at practice, the Redskins had another special guest on Wednesday: Jon Gruden.

Gruden, of course, is the older brother of Redskins head coach Jay Gruden. Jon Gruden also won Super Bowl XXXVII as head coach of the Buccaneers and now works as analyst for ESPN’s Monday Night Football.

“I’m really proud of him, No. 1,” Jon Gruden said. “And I have a lot respect for what needs to get done here. …It looks like they’ve improved their football team, as well.”

Jon Gruden is scheduled to be in the ESPN booth for three Redskins’ games--Cleveland in the preseason and Seattle and Dallas in the regular season.

“There are times when you’re philosophical about things and you have to step back and pinch yourself a little bit, feel how fortunate you are to have had these opportunities,” Jon Gruden said. “He’s been a head coach in Arena ball. It’s all in perspective. He’s got to take advantage of this opportunity just like he’s taken and of all those before, let it all go and see what happens.”

Jay Gruden said he enjoyed catching up with Jon and expected to get his impressions on how he’s running his first NFL offseason program.

“He just came in to watch how we’re doing things,” Jay Gruden said. “He’s still an avid football fan obviously. He likes to stay up-to-date on what’s going on around the league. Obviously, his sons are close to my sons, so it’s good to get together with him.”

Jay Gruden also said he hopes to convince Jon to address the Redskins on Thursday.

“It’s good to have him here,” he said. “He’s a great presence. Hopefully I’ll get him to talk to the team a little bit tomorrow and pick his brain some more here after practice. Then maybe play a little golf."

Robert Griffin III said Jon Gruden was in the team meeting earlier Wednesday and that he expects to see “our fair share of Jon here” this season.
