SAN ANGELO — No. 23 Lubbock Christian University beat No. 17 Angelo State 9-8 Friday night in a Lone Star Conference baseball series opener, giving Nathan Blackwood his 700th victory as the Chaparrals' head coach.

Blackwood just broke the school record for coaching victories two weeks ago when he topped Larry Hays' 695 wins.

Leadoff batter Eduardo Acosta went 4 for 5 with two runs batted in and two scored as LCU (12-3, 10-3) won its fifth game in a row and 10th out of 11. The Chaparrals broke a 6-6 tie in the ninth on a run-scoring single from Edgar Hernandez and a two-run homer from Jarred Gibson.

In the bottom of the ninth, Kamden Kelton and Jackson Hardy had RBI groundouts for Angelo State (13-4, 13-4), but the Rams had their five-game win streak snapped.

Larry Leitha hit his fourth home run for LCU. Luis Navarro and Mason Donohoe both had two hits and an RBI. Navarro has reached base in 53 consecutive games dating to last season.

Winning pitcher Peyton Hutson (4-0) relieved starter Ethan Coombes in the fifth inning and went 3 2/3. Hutson allowed two runs on four hits and three walks. Cannon Davis pitched the ninth and got his second save.

The Rams host the Chaps in the finale of the four-game series at 1 p.m. Sunday.
