Who are the biggest surprises from Jacksonville's 2023 roster cuts?

Cut down day around the NFL always comes with a few surprises as players who were vying for roster spots are released. The Jacksonville Jaguars have trimmed down their roster as they prepare for the regular season.

With injuries, practice squad additions plus other roster moves still to be made, there's still a number of players on this list who could end up back with the team.

Here's a list of players who were surprisingly released by the Jaguars on Tuesday:

NFL Cut Day: Jacksonville Jaguars trim roster to 53 ahead of league deadline

Gerrit Prince, Tight end

Prince had a breakout camp for the Jaguars. He was positioning himself to be Evan Engram's immediate back up on the roster.

But the reality is with injuries to the offensive line and depth at receiver, Prince became a player the team could move on from without losing a lot of value.

Jacob Harris, Wide receiver

The athletic and long wide out caught fire late in camp. He had experience over most of the other receivers he was battling with.

In the end, the depth of the position proved to be the reason he was cut.

Erick Hallett, Defensive back

Jacksonville Jaguars cornerback Erick Hallett II (40) looks on during the first day of a mandatory minicamp Monday, June 12, 2023 at TIAA Bank Field in Jacksonville, Fla. This is the first of a three day camp June 12-14.

Hallett snagged the most interceptions through camp but played at position(s) with good depth. Whether it's safety, where he primarily was featured, or nickel corner, those places are stocked with defensive backs.

He's a talented player and the team will hope to keep him on the practice squad.

Jordan Smith, OLB/EDGE

Smith plays a position that lacks depth for Jacksonville so it's surprising he wasn't retained by the team.

Coaches have been impressed with rookie Yasir Abdullah and likely believe he'll be able to adjust to the NFL quickly.

Raymond Vohasek, Defensive line

With Davon Hamilton still recovering from his injury, and Foley Fatukasi working his way back, the door was open for the rookie draft pick to try to show a little extra and make the team.

With the emergence and experience of Jeremiah Ledbetter, the door was shut on that chance.

Kevin Austin Jr., Wide receiver

Through the first half of camp it seemed that Austin would have a strong shot to make the final roster. He received praise from teammates and coaches alike for his development during the offseason

But after drops against Dallas in preseason Week 1, the writing was on the wall for the 2022 undrafted free agent.

The veteran corner was brought in last year to add depth after Shaq Griffin's injury.

But after the Jaguars' added two defensive backs through the draft and developed Buster Brown for a year, he's on the outside looking in.
