Big takeaways from the Steelers selection of TE Darnell Washington

The Pittsburgh Steelers surprised a lot of people when they used their third-round pick on Georgia tight end Darnell Washington. Here are our takeaways from the pick.

With Darnell Washington and Pat Freiermuth on the roster, look for lots of 12 personnel with one running back and two tight ends. The Steelers turned to a power run game down the stretch and Washington basically adds a sixth offensive lineman who is also a freakish athlete as a receiver.

The combination of the addition of Washington and the fact fullback Derek Watt isn’t signed could mean the Steelers will move Connor Heyward to fullback on the roster so they can keep Zach Gentry.

Red zone mismatches

The combination of Pat Freiermuth and Darnell Washington are going to be a nightmare for opposing defenses to sort out in the red zone and should really help the numbers of Kenny Pickett.
