Big night for Bastis: Top Greater Taunton H.S. sports performances for Jan. 29-Feb. 4

TAUNTON— Another week of high school sports action is upon us in the Greater Taunton area.

Last week, Bristol Aggie/Dighton-Rehoboth wrestling scored a key Mayflower Athletic Conference win over Bristol-Plymouth in an all-local affair while Southeastern/Bristol-Plymouth continued their winning streak and earned at least a share of the MAC title. Five Taunton wrestlers were crowned Hockomock champions and Taunton girls basketball continued to push for their first ever Hockomock title.

Here's a look at the at the Greater Taunton area's top performing high school athletes from the final days of January and first few days of February.

Sunday

Girls Basketball

Camden Strandberg led the way for Bridgewater-Raynham (12-3, 4-1 SEC) with 18 points and seven rebounds while Brenna Woodbury had 15 points, five rebounds, five assists and five steals and Reese Bartlett had 11 points, five rebounds and five assists as the Trojans beat Milton 50-36 at home in non-league action.

Saturday

Boys Hockey

Tre Nadeau led the way for Taunton (11-5-1, 4-4-1 Hockomock) with a pair of goals, including the game winner, while Owen Hathaway and Brady Gomes also found the back of the net, Conner Goranson and Jonathan McGrath each had a pair of assists and Matt Maher, Jamie Valarelli and Drew Nadeau all recorded assists as the Tigers beat Somerset Berkley 4-3 in overtime on the road in non-league action. Cam Tomaszycki made 19 saves in net for Taunton.

Will Foley, Sean Nasiff and Matt Lydon all found the back of net as Bridgewater-Raynham (1-14) fell 7-3 to Scituate at home.

Southeastern/Bristol-Plymouth (12-4, 9-1 MAC) beat Stoughton/Brockton 5-2 on the road in non-league action.

Aidan Boothe led the way for Dighton-Rehoboth/Seekonk (7-7, 3-4 SCC) with a goal and an assist while Adam Bastis also found the back of the net and Evan Silvia and Connar Dexter each recorded assists as the Falcon Warriors fell 5-2 to Medway at home in non-league action.

Girls Hockey

Abby Gropman scored the lone goal for West Bridgewater/East Bridgewater/Bridgewater-Raynham/Bristol-Plymouth/Southeastern/Middleboro (6-10) as the Wild Vikings fell 3-1 to Dennis-Yarmouth at home.

Mansfield/Oliver Ames/Foxboro/Taunton (5-7-2, 3-4-0 Hockomock) fell 2-1 in overtime to Franklin at home in Hockomock action.

Girls Swimming

Abigail Fernandes was the top individual finisher for Taunton (5-2, 4-2 Hockomock), coming in sixth in both the 50 yard freestyle and 100 yard freestyle as the Tigers finished sixth overall with 152 points at the Hockomock League Championship meet at Milford High School. For other top 16 finishes, Megan Viveiros came in eighth in the the 500 yard freestyle and 11th in the 200 yard freestyle, Eliana Gay came in 11th in the 100 yard butterfly and 12th in the 100 yard breaststroke, Emma Bradley came in 12th in the 100 yard freestyle and 13th in the 100 yard backstroke, Mila Dafov came in 14th in both the 100 yard freestyle and 200 yard individual medley, Elizabeth Tobolski finished 14th in the 50 yard freestyle, Lilia Ballantine finished 15th in the 100 yard breaststroke and Rachel Maynard finished 12th in the 500 yard freestyle and 16th in the 200 yard freestyle. The 200 yard freestyle relay team of Bradley, Tobolski, Viveiros and Fernandes finished fifth, the 200 yard medley relay team of Bradley, Ballantine, Gay and Fernandes finished eighth and the 400 yard freestyle relay team of Dafov, Maynard, Tobolski and Fernandes finished eighth.

Wrestling

Mike Leskoski (120), John Mandeville (144), Gabe Leskoski (150) and Ethan Harris (190) won all four of their respective matches as Taunton (13-6, 3-2 Hockomock) defeated Brockton 46-24, Xaverian 39-34, Woburn 61-9 and Quincy/North Quincy 51-25 in a non-league quint meet at Brockton High School. Elijah Prophete (215) won all three of his matches and won by forfeit against Woburn.

Boys Basketball

Troy Santos led the way for Taunton (12-4, 8-4 Hockomock) with a double double of 33 points and 10 rebounds, as well as eight assists, while Cyrus Morrisette had 17 points, Tyson Carter had 14 and Travis Johnson had a double double of 11 points and 13 rebounds, as well as four steals and three blocks, as the Tigers beat North Attleboro 87-58 at home in Hockomock action.

Greg Aisku led the way for Bristol-Plymouth (6-9, 3-3 MAC) with 17 points while Ryan Donovan and Donte Morris both had 11 as the Craftsmen fell 75-57 to Case on the road in non-league action.

Girls Basketball

Chelsea Bousquet led the way for Taunton (12-4, 8-4 Hockomock) with 13 points while Cali Melo had 12 and Taryn Campbell had eight as the Tigers fell 51-42 to North Attleboro on the road in non-league action.

Camden Strandberg led the way for Bridgewater-Raynham (11-3, 4-1 SEC) with 13 points and four rebounds while Brenna Woodbury had nine points and eight rebounds as the Trojans defeated defending Division 1 champions Andover 34-30 on the road in non-league action.

Bristol-Plymouth (3-12, 0-6 MAC) fell 68-25 to Greater New Bedford on the road in non-league action.

Boys Swimming

The relay team of Maddox Chaves, Eduardo Freitas-Gardinal, Harrison Layden and Blake Couto finished ninth in the 200 yard freestyle and 10th in the 400 yard freestyle as Taunton (0-7, 0-6 Hockomock) finished 12th overall with 32 points at the Hockomock League Championship meet at Milford High School.

Taunton (3-5, 3-5 Hockomock) fell 135.9-128.1 to Oliver Ames on the road in Hockomock action.

Wednesday

Boys Basketball

Ryan Donovan led the way for Bristol-Plymouth (6-8, 3-3 MAC) with 12 points while Donte Morris had seven and Brady Erlichman had six as the Craftsmen fell 75-42 to Shawsheen Valley Tech on the road in non-league action.

Boys Hockey

Cam Tomaszycki made 21 saves as Taunton (10-5-1, 4-4-1 Hockomock) fell 3-0 to Foxboro on the road in Hockomock action.

Cam Perry scored the lone goal for Southeastern/Bristol-Plymouth (11-4, 9-1 MAC) as the Hawks fell 4-1 to Diman/Durfee/Westport at home in MAC action. With the loss, the two teams split the MAC Large title.

Dighton-Rehoboth/Seekonk (7-6, 3-4 SCC) fell 4-3 in overtime to Bourne on the road in SCC action.

Girls Hockey

Wrestling

Mike Leskoski (120), John Mandeville (144), Gabe Leskoski (150), Ethan Harris (190), Elijah Prophete (215) and Antonio Maldonado (285) all won their respective matches as Taunton (9-6, 3-2 Hockomock) fell 36-30 to Beverly on the road in a non-league dual meet.

Bridgewater-Raynham defeated Bristol Aggie/Dighton-Rehoboth 51-27 at home in a non-league dual meet. Earning wins for the Trojans were Lucas Santos (120), Matthew Fernandes (126), Josh Hogg (132), Brent von Magnus (138), Jack Alves (144), Brenton Allain (157), Luke Driscoll (175) and Fletcher Rinke (190), while Kyle LaCivita (215) won by forfeit. As for BA/DR, Griffin Machie (106), Luis Garcia (113), Josh Hoskins (150) and Johnathan Borges (165) all won their respective matches.

Brooke Weafer (113), Colin Donovan (120), Danny Keefe (138), Jacob Bettencourt (144), Nathan Hicks (157) and Jack Ramondetta (165) all won their respective matches, while Colby Grenon (106) won by forfeit, as Bristol-Plymouth (21-4) beat Somerset Berkley/Case 41-36 on the road in a non-league dual meet.

Boys Basketball

Troy Santos led the way for Taunton (11-4, 7-4 Hockomock) with 17 points, seven rebounds, six assists and four steals while Tyson Carter had 17 points and four steals and Kenzel Jeanmichel and Brandon Adorno each had nine points as the Tigers beat Foxboro 63-47 on the road in Hockomock action.

Noah Perry-Lewis led the way for Bridgewater-Raynham (7-8, 2-3 Southeast Conference) with 22 points, including the game-winning 'and one,' while Cason Faulk had 18 as the Trojans beat New Bedford 60-59 in overtime on the road in SEC action.

Ryan Donovan led the way for Bristol-Plymouth (6-7, 3-3 MAC) with 24 points while Donte Morris had 18, Zack Branco had 11 and Greg Aisku had nine as the Craftsmen beat Diman 66-60 on the road in MAC action.

Dennis Correia led the way for Dighton-Rehoboth (6-8, 2-7 SCC) with 11 points while Jordan Dietz had nine as the Falcons fell 63-40 to Old Rochester on the road in SCC action.

Girls Basketball

Cali Melo led the way for Taunton (12-3, 8-3 Hockomock) with 12 points while Lexi Haywood had nine points and Jillian Doherty had six points, 10 rebounds, four assists and three blocks as the Tigers fell 63-39 to Foxboro at home in Hockomock action.

Camden Strandberg led the way for Bridgewater-Raynham (10-3, 4-1 SEC) with 17 points, six rebounds and two assists while Brenna Woodbury had 16 points, seven rebounds, five assists and two steals, Kate Lambert had 11 points and four rebounds and Libby Cronin had 10 points and seven rebounds as the Trojans beat New Bedford 61-43 at home in SEC action. With the win, B-R has qualified for the tournament for the 10th straight season.

Emma Ericson led the way for Bristol-Plymouth (3-11, 0-6 MAC) with a career-high 19 points while Alyssa Costa had eight as the Craftsmen fell 42-33 to Diman at home in MAC action.

Megan Keane led the way for Dighton-Rehoboth (1-14, 0-9 SCC) with 11 points while Caraline Corvi had seven and Lucy Latour had six as the Falcons fell 53-31 to Old Rochester at home in SCC action.

Emma Ericson led the way for Bristol-Plymouth (3-10, 0-5 Mayflower Athletic Conference) with 14 points while Gianna Viola had seven as the Craftsmen beat Norfolk Aggie 29-22 on the road in MAC action.

Boys Hockey

Jamie Valarelli led the way for Taunton (10-4-1, 4-3-1 Hockomock League) with a pair of goals and an assist while Breighdyn Simmons had a goal and an assist, Jonathan McGrath had a goal, Drew Nadeau had a pair of assists and Jason Cashman recorded an assist as the Tigers beat Everett/Revere 4-3 on the road in non-league action. Luke Pellerin made 24 saves in net for Taunton, who officially qualified for the Division 3 tournament with the win over the Crimson Tide.

Adam Bastis led the way for Dighton-Rehoboth/Seekonk (7-5, 3-3 South Coast Conference) with a hattrick and three assists while Aidan Boothe had a pair of goals and an assist, Brett Axon had a goal and two assists, Connar Dexter had a goal and an assist, Cameron Johnson had a pair of assists and Collin Aguiar and Connor VanVaerenewyck each recorded assists as the Falcon Warriors beat Greater New Bedford 7-3 on the road in SCC action.

Girls Hockey

Mackenzie Whitman led the way for West Bridgewater/East Bridgewater/Bridgewater-Raynham/Bristol-Plymouth/Southeastern/Middleboro (6-8) with a goal and an assist while Caitlin Kelly scored her first varsity goal and Kate Carabin recorded an assist as the Wild Vikings fell 3-2 to Leominster on the road.
