Hogan, Nicklaus, Palmer, John Daly. To say that last name doesn’t belong in the company of the other three is an injustice to iconic golf swings. The ones that fans only need a glimpse of before identifying the golfer.
John Daly came onto the golf scene back in 1991 and instantly created a tale of 72-hole dreams at the PGA Championship host course that year, Crooked Stick. Armed with a swing that was an artistic blend of voracity and tempo, Daly launched an assault that ended with the Wanamaker Trophy in his hands.
Not bad for an alternate.
Since then, Daly has provided a commonality that mirrors the masses, where the stuffy elements of golf are cast aside for the realities of going through life.
And Daly’s popularity has continued to grow. A cancer survivor and champion life-liver, he is as recognizable today for his outfits as the past-parallel arc in his swing.
