Berks wrestlers win 19 individual titles, two team championships at weekend events [updated]

Dec. 17—Berks wrestlers won 19 individual titles and two team championships at tournaments held over the weekend.

Exeter had four individual winners — Cole Forsythe (106), Michael Borja (139), Ashton Warchal (150) and Finn Strauss (175) — in earning the team title at the 32-team Howdy Duncan Classic in New Castle, Delaware.

Tulpehocken had five individual champs — Abramm Schaffer (114), Landon Youse (133), Jonathan McQuillen (152), Mark Forry (160) and Alexander Klonis (215) — in winning the team title at the eight-team Pequea Valley Invitational.

Other Berks individual champs at Pequea Valley: Muhlenberg's Efrain Garcia (107) and Mason Zona (189), and Brandywine Heights' Jacob Greiss (121).

Wilson's James Garcia (133) and Ryan McMillan (215) won individual titles at the Carlisle Classic.

Daniel Boone's Dean Houser (133) and Tucker Hogan (189) won championships at the Panther Holiday Classic at Mount Aloysius College in Cresson.

Wyomissing's Marvin Armistead (139) and Caleb Brewer (285) won championships at Elizabethtown's BAGUBA Brawl.

In girls wrestling, Tulpehocken's Katalyna Borreli won the 142-pound title at the Elizabethtown Girls BAGUBA Brawl Sunday.

Here's a closer look at each event:

Howdy Duncan Classic: Forsythe, a sophomore, defeated Red Lion Christian Academy's Dominic Spennato 7-6 in the final. Forsythe opened with three pins before winning by major decision in the semifinals.

Borja, a senior, defeated Lower Dauphin's Griffin Barilla 9-0 in the final. Borja opened with three pins before winning by technical fall in the semis.

Warchol, a senior, pinned Milford's Hunter Durham in 1:48 in the final. Warchol opened with three pins, then won by technical fall in the semifinals.

Strauss, a senior, defeated Lower Dauphin's Marshal Stahl 3-1 in the final.

Other place winners for Exeter: Sam Johnson, third, 120; Joseph Henderson, third, 144; Kevin Oswalt, third, 190; Travis Harner, fifth, 157; Zumar Boston, fifth, 165; and Matthew Lis, sixth, 285.

Pequea Valley Invitational: For Tulpehocken in winning finals, Schaffer, a sophomore, defeated Muhlenberg's Javien Cruz 8-4; Youse, a junior, defeated Pequea Valley's Lincoln Houck 12-5; McQuillen, a junior, pinned Brandywine's Charlie Trumbauer in 1:51; Forry, a junior, beat Garden Spot's Alejandro Romero 10-1; and Klonis, a junior, pinned York Tech's Kenneth Glover in 34 seconds.

McQuillen won both his matches and Klonis all three of his by pin.

For Muhlenberg in winning finals, Efrain Garcia, a senior, defeated Kennett's Bryce Boyer 5-2; and Zona, a senior, pinned Garden Spot's Jayden Redcay in 4:56.

Zona won all three of his matches by pin.

For Brandywine, Greiss, a junior, beat Tulpehocken's Jackson McQuillen 5-2 in the final.

Other Berks wrestlers finishing second were Brandywine's Keegan Bollinger (127), Tulpehocken's Seth Karpulk (145), Troy Ruffner (172), and Tulpehocken's Jack Heckman (285).

Placing third from Berks: Tulpehocken's Mason Frederick (152) and Gionni Messersmith (189); Muhlenberg's Hudson Hartz (121), Connor Schlegel (133), Bryant Kranwinkel (139), Nicholas Bradbury (145) and Vinny Cardell (172); and Kutztown's Robbie Ott (160).

Finishing fourth: Kutztown's James Smith (145) and Brandywine's Gavin Yerance (285).

Placing fifth: Tulpehocken's Dominic Stoudt (160); Muhlenberg's Romeo Grullon (152) and Logan Manion (215); and Brandywine's Thomas Moore (133) and William Womack (139).

Coming in sixth: Tulpehocken's Ian Brett (145); and Kutztown's Tucker Hilliard (127), Isaac Wood (133) and Royce Bitner (285).

Placing seventh: Tulpehocken's Kobalt Seigfried (139); Brandywine's Aydyn Stoll (145) and William DiDomenico (189); and Kutztown's Edison Yang (285).

Kutztown's Zane Cherrie (139) finished eighth.

In the team standings, Muhlenberg was third, Brandywine sixth and Kutztown eighth.

Carlisle Classic: James Garcia, a senior, defeated Bermudian Springs' Hayden Yacoviello-Andrus 6-1 in the final. Yacoviello-Andrus finished third in the state in Class 2A at 127 pounds last year.

McMillan, a senior, won by technical fall over West Perry's Quade Boden in 4:43 (18-1) in the final. Boden qualified for states in Class 2A last season. McMillan won each of his first three matches by pin.

Other place winners for Wilson, which finished second at the 21-team tournament: McKaden Speece, second, 127; Matteo Garcia, second, 160; Blaise Eidle, second, 172; Logan Kurzweg, fourth, 285; Isaac Eidle, fifth, 114; and Reese Eidle, sixth, 121.

Panther Holiday Classic: Houser, a senior, defeated Connelsville's Kai Vielma 2-1 in the final. Houser won his first three matches by pin, then won by technical fall in the semifinals.

Tucker Hogan defeated Huntingdon's Andrew McMongale 13-4 in the final. Hogan won his first three matches by pin before winning by technical fall in the semifinals. It was his third straight individual title at the event.

Boone finished 16th at the 50-team event.

Twin Valley also competed, finishing 32nd.

Senior Ean Winchester finished second at 285 pounds for the Raiders, losing 3-1 in sudden victory to Spring Grove's Michael Hershey in the final. Hershey finished seventh in the state in Class 3A last season.

Jacob Gryzbek finished fifth at 139 for Twin Valley.

BAGUBA Brawl: Armistead, a senior, pinned Annville-Cleona's Cael Harter in 3:14 in the final. Armistead won his first two matches by pin before winning by technical fall in the semifinals.

Brewer, a senior, pinned Hershey's Cory Schaffer in 52 seconds in the final. Brewer won all four of his matches by pin.

Other place winners for Wyomissing, which finished eighth at the 10-team tournament: Tyler Niedrowski, third, 189; Kade Yourkavitch, fourth, 127; Andrew Bresnahan, fifth, 189; Aidan Sierra, sixth, 121; and Marcus Armistead, sixth, 133.

Elizabethtown Girls BAGUBA Brawl: Borreli, a junior, pinned North Allegheny's Audrey Morrison in 5:46 in the final. She also won her other three matches by pin.

Gov. Mifflin also competed at the 24-team event. Place winners for the Mustangs were Emily Yerger, second, 130; Stacey Frias-Guillen, eighth, 106; and Ciandra Diaz, eighth, 235.

Mifflin finished 16th and Tulpehocken 20th in the team standings.

Snacktown Duals: Reading High went 4-1 at Hanover.

The Red Knights defeated Susquehannock 39-36, Hanover 53-22, East Pennsboro 42-24 and Lampeter-Strasburg 49-24, and lost to Delone Catholic 42-27.

Going 5-0 for the Red Knights were Quesean Dowell (121), Christian Perez (160/172, four pins) and Nolyn Peters (139, three pins).

Schuylkill Valley also competed at Hanover, but the results were not reported.
