Bensalem's Dean gets caught in MLB Draft by Cubs

Nick Dean is a Chicago Cub.

The Cubs picked Dean, a Bensalem graduate, in the 19th round of the MLB Draft from the University of Maryland.

Dean, a 6-foot-3, 180-pound right-handed pitcher, was the 556th overall selection following a senior year with the Terrapins in which he went 3-2 with a 5.54 ERA in 15 appearances (all starts) and 77 strikeouts in 74⅔ innings. His best outing might have been his first of the season in which he threw six shutout innings against South Florida, striking out eight and allowing just two baserunners.

Dean went 13-6 in his four years at Maryland, striking out 219 in 231 innings. His best season, statistically, was as a sophomore when he went 3-1 with a 2.87 ERA and a WHIP of 1.088. He shut out Campbell and Baylor over seven innings apiece as a junior, striking out a combined 15 and walking only two batters on the way to a 6-2 record and third-team All-Big Ten honors that year.

Dean, 22, throws a fastball that reaches into the low 90s, plus a cutter, breaking ball and a changeup that can be his best pitch.

At Bensalem, Dean helped the 2018 Owls to the District One championship and the PIAA Class 6A state title game as a junior. He tossed a two-hit shutout with nine strikeouts in a 6-0 state quarterfinal win over Williamsport on the way to a 6-3 record, 1.43 ERA and 60 strikeouts in 49 innings for head coach Harry Daut's squad.
