Benilde-St. Margaret's takes off in second half to bury Winona in state girls soccer semis

Oct. 31—MINNEAPOLIS — Winona was in its Class 2A girls soccer state semifinal match with Benilde-St. Margaret's for the first 40 minutes.

The second 40 didn't go nearly so well, when the Red Knights outscored it 5-0 and ran off with a 7-1 win at U.S. Bank Stadium.

Winona (18-2-1) used a goal from Faith Quinn at the midway mark of the first half to make it a 1-1 game. BSM scored again one minute later and from there the rout was on.

Benilde-St. Margaret's got three goals from Brooklyn Miller and two from Kiya Gilliand as the state tournament's No. 2 seed pushed their record to 18-0-3.

The Red Knights entered the game as one of the state's most prolific scoring teams, averaging 4.2 goals per game. Winona was averaging 3.8 and allowing just 0.8. BSM will face Holy Angels at 2:45 p.m. Friday at U.S. Bank Stadium in the Class 2A championship.

Winona, which is at state for the second straight year, is seeded third and plays No. 4 seed Totino-Grace for third place at 11 a.m. Wednesday at West St. Paul Regional Athletics Center. Totino-Grace lost 4-1 in the other semifinal Tuesday.
