Bengals depth chart gets boost with return of TE Mitchell Wilcox

The Cincinnati Bengals re-upped with tight end Mitchell Wilcox before training camp started as expected and now he’s back on the active roster.

Wilcox, a former undrafted free agent, didn’t get an RFA tender from the team this offseason and once re-signed, went to the PUP list as he rehabbed an injury.

But a reunion and activation prior to the season was always the predictable end result here. Wilcox has carved out a nice depth role for himself since 2020 and the team didn’t make a notable move at the position beyond signing Irv Smith Jr. as the Hayden Hurst replacement.

Given his experience and ability to help on special teams, Wilcox feels like a shoo-in for a 53 spot if all goes well. That could position him to rotate with Drew Sample when necessary as the second or third tight end.
