Have the Bears found their new franchise quarterback?

The Chicago Bears are in a state of disarray at the quarterback position. Jay Cutler is on his way out, Brian Hoyer will be a free agent at the end of the year. Connor Shaw isn’t starter material, and Matt Barkley flat out sucks. It’s safe to say that quarterback will be a target in the draft this year. Thankfully, it seems like they may have found their guy.

According to NFL Draft Bites, the Bears are showing heavy interest in North Carolina quarterback Mitch Trubisky. Mr. Bites also reported that Bears coach John Fox is begging for a new quarterback. If the reports are true, this could be a new era in the history of Chicago Bears football.

Although Trubisky hadn’t broken out when I wrote my quarterback rankings, I now have him as my #1 QB in this class. He is an all-around great quarterback who excels at many important aspects of the game. For one thing, he has great poise in and out of the pocket. His footwork is fantastic, and he is able to extend the play with a scramble.

Trubisky is also one thing that current Bears quarterback Jay Cutler is not: smart. Trubisky only has four interceptions all year, and two of those came in hurricane conditions. He is a very accurate passer who rarely makes mistakes. That would definitely be a breath of fresh air after years of awful Cutler mistakes.

There is one drawback on Trubisky, though: he has only been a starter for one year. He sat last year under the wing of Marquise Williams. Although this does seem a bit worrisome, just remember that Cam Newton only played one year before going first overall. It’s not necessarily something to freak out about.

Obtaining Trubisky wouldn’t be all that hard, either. The Bears currently hold the third pick, sitting behind the Browns and the 49ers. Both teams need quarterbacks, but that doesn’t necessarily mean they’ll pick Trubisky. It will be tough for the Browns to pass up on Myles Garrett with the first pick. Plus, the 49ers will likely find Notre Dame’s DeShone Kizer as a better scheme fit due to his mobility. That leaves the Bears with Trubisky still on the board for the taking.

As a Bears fan, as well as an analyst, I hope that the Bears at least consider picking Mitch Trubisky. It would do our future a lot of good.
