Basketball roundup for Dec. 30: Aiden Lieber shines but Crazy Horse tops MCS boys

Dec. 30—HURON, S.D. — Mitchell Christian's Aiden Lieber went off for 33 points and 17 rebounds but Crazy Horse stood up the Golden Eagles for a 63-45 boys basketball victory on Saturday at the Huron Holiday Classic.

Mitchell Christian led 24-19 at halftime but the Chiefs outscored the Golden Eagles 23-11 in the third quarter and 21-10 in the final eight minutes.

Lieber was 15-for-23 shooting for the game, all without taking a 3-pointer. As a team, MCS finished 19-for-43 shooting from the field and was 1-for-10 on 3-pointers. Luke Mentele had seven points but the Golden Eagles were sunk by 27 turnovers in the loss.

Richard Pumpkin Seed scored 30 points and drilled seven 3-pointers for the Chiefs, while also recording eight steals. Donnie Ghost Dog had 13 points and Devaughn Between had 12 points for Crazy Horse, which shot 24% in the first half but rebounded in the second half by hitting 8-of-16 3-pointers.

Crazy Horse (4-3) will play next at Marty on Jan. 5. Mitchell Christian (0-4) is back in action on Thursday, Jan. 4 at Menno.

* Three Raiders in double figures helped Lyman to double up Langford Area 62-31 on Saturday. Jonas Zirpel and M.J. Diehm had 13 points and Dawsen Volmer scored 10 points for Lyman, which held the Lions to 26.8% shooting for the game. Rennan Bruns had 10 points for Langford.

* Quentin McBride Jr. scored a game-high 26 points to power Lower Brule to a 55-49 win over Sanborn Central/Woonsocket. The Sioux had 14 points from Lane Gray and 13 points from Elliot LaRoche. SCW had 19 points from Jeff Boschee, 11 points from Payton Uecker and 10 points for Cody Slykhuis. SCW led by as many as 11 points in the first quarter but Lower Brule had a 27-point second quarter to get in front and lead 32-27 at halftime.

* Four double-figure scorers led Clark/Willow Lake past Chamberlain 62-47 in Huron. The Cyclones had 14 points each from Bo Begeman and Jack Helkenn, plus 12 from Emmerson Larson and 10 from Sullivan Felberg. Dakota Munger had a game-high 16 points for the Cubs, with 13 points for Cruz Soulek and Breckyn Harmon with 12 points.

* Faulkton Area's Layne Cotton posted 34 points to power the Trojans to a two-point win over Burke 55-53. Cotton was 15-for-23 from the field, helping Faulkton overcome a 2-for-20 effort as a team on 3-pointers. Burke had 16 points and seven rebounds from Quinten Bull, plus 12 points from Sam Steele, as the Cougars shot 51.2% in the game.

* A 22-6 second-quarter margin was more than enough for Wessington Springs to defeat Jones County 67-27. Parker Graff led the Spartans with 24 points and Colby Flowers finished with 14 points and nine rebounds, five off the offensive glass. Gunnar Whitney and Bryer Kinsley had five points each to lead Jones County.

* Howard's Luke Koepsell went 8-of-10 from the field and scored 21 points, leading the Tigers to a 70-52 victory over James Valley Christian. Kolt Koepsell had 15 points and seven rebounds, while Taiden Hoyer and Colby Claussen each finished with 11 points. JVC's Dax Frandsen finished with 12 points.
