Basketball Recap: Coldwater gives up lead late, falls to Lakeview; Quincy rolls past Camden

COLDWATER – The Coldwater boys basketball team saw a potential win slip just out of their grasps Tuesday night as the Cardinals gave up a double-digit lead and fell to Lakeview by the score of 39-36.

Coldwater had a chance to tie up the game with 13.1 seconds left, however an attempted three pointer from Niko Downs rimmed out and after an offensive rebound the final Cardinal try was blocked, preserving the win for the Spartans.

Coldwater controlled much of the game, leading 14-6 after one quarter and 20-6 midway through the second. That is when Lakeview went on a tear, closing out the half on a 12-0 run to whittle the lead all the way down to 20-18 at the break.

Coldwater’s cold shooting continued in the second half as Lakeview quickly took the lead, which climbed to as much as 24-20. Coldwater got things rolling again and managed to build a 29-26 lead after three quarters thanks to an Ayden Dirschell buzzer beater.

Coldwater’s lead grew to as much as 8 points late, leading 34-26 with 6 minutes to go in the game, however Lakeview closed the game on a 13-4 run, going on to take the 39-36 win.

Coldwater was led by Gavin Taylor who had 14 points while Dirschell added 10 points and 5 rebounds. Zach Coffing had 6 rebounds and 3 assists to help the Cardinal effort.

Quincy routs Camen Frontier in home opener

QUINCY – The Quincy Orioles raced out to a 23-2 lead in the first quarter over their visitors from Camden Frontier and never looked back, rolling to the 55-7 win.

Quincy was able to jump out quickly thanks to a suffocating pressure defense that created a bevy of offensive opportunities for the Orioles.

“This was a nice team win, with contributions from everyone on the roster,” Quincy coach Scott Rodesiler said. “We played strong defense tonight, shared the ball well, and limited turnovers.”

Quincy was led by Ryan Kempter who had 13 points and 5 steals while Grant Carter added 9 points, 5 assists and 3 rebounds. Brandon Miner chipped in with 6 points and 6 rebounds while Clayton Benson added 6 points, 6 steals, 4 rebounds, and 3 assists.

Quincy improves to 1-1 on the young season and will see action again on Tuesday when they open Big 8 play with a trip to Concord.
