Game recap: Rye Neck 1, Pleasantville 0
MAMARONECK - It's the age old debate: which is better, the first part or the sequel?
If you ask Rye Neck and sophomore catcher Zach Strzalkowski, they'll tell you it's the latter.
An untimely and intense thunderstorm forced Rye Neck and Pleasantville, two teams unbeaten in league play, to split their game into two parts. On Monday, it was an intense pitchers' duel between Rye Neck's George Katsaros and Pleasantville's Charlie Bateman, who set the tone for their respective teams, before play was halted.
After deliberation and an agreement to continue the suspended game from the fifth inning on Tuesday, Strzalkowski broke the stalemate, providing the game-winning heroics in the bottom of the seventh. With two runners on, Strzalkowski made solid contact and sent the ball into left field for the 1-0 walkoff win.
"We had really good preparation the day before, our guy George (Katsaros), set us up really well," Strzalkowski said. "It was really a team win, we all did our part offensively and defensively. (Julian) Frabasile with a perfect bunt to get (Daniel) Stone to third to set up the situation, so I can only thank my team.
"That was my first (walk-off hit), but the first of many, hopefully. Just wanted to put the ball in the outfield, make something happen, sac fly, get that run home in any means possible."
Despite new pitchers taking the mound for Tuesday's game, per pitch count rules, Rye Neck's Eli Goldman and Pleasantville's Reed Supranowitz picked up from where their teammates started off on Monday, keeping it a stingy, closely-contested battle.
"I was ready, I found out last night and I knew what I had to do," Goldman said of getting the call to take the mound on Tuesday. "I felt good pregame. Our coach hyped us up, we knew what we had to do. We had nine outs left and they only had eight, so we knew we had the advantage. George did his job, so I had to do my job, and I knew my team would back me up and they did."
There weren't many scoring opportunities, until the final inning, when Daniel Stone got on base with a leadoff single for Rye Neck, followed by a well-executed bunt by Julian Frabasile and an errant throw that allowed them both to move in to scoring position.
From there, Strzalkowski provided the game-winner, to give the Panthers their seventh-straight win. During this streak, they've been able to win in tense moments, with four games in the winning stretch decided by one.
"That just shows what kind of team we are," Rye Neck coach George Travis said. "We're able to handle ourselves under pressure and hopefully, we can continue to do that the rest of the season and towards the playoffs. We play Pleasantville again tomorrow (Wednesday), another big game, obviously. Now that we're up 1-0 on them, I know they're going to come out hot and ready to go."
FINAL: @RNHSBaseball 1, @baseball_pville 0

In the earlier half of the game on Monday, Rye Neck's Katsaros and Pleasantville's Bateman were rolling.
Katsaros tallied eight strikeouts so far, including six-straight to start the game. He only gave up two hits, to Pleasantville's Jack Van Sise and Declan Bruder, in the fourth inning, as Pleasantville threatened with runners on the corners, but Rye Neck was able to fend off the threat and keep it a scoreless affair.
Bateman was equally tough, relinquishing only three hits, while striking out six batters. Rye Neck's Stone, Frabasile, and Davey Ryan each recorded hits in Monday's portion of the game.
Rye Neck also gave Pleasantville a scare in the fourth inning, with two runners in scoring position, as Ryan got a hit and Daniel Zyngier got a walk. However, Bateman showed tremendous guts, striking out back-to-back batters to get out of the jam and keep things scoreless.
The season series isn't over yet, as action returns to Pleasantville on Wednesday, and both teams will be hoping for no more stoppages and delays in a full rematch.
"It's definitely a learning experience," Pleasantville coach George LaMar said. "We need to make sure we come ready to play every day, take care of the little things and play hard. ... We came out with a good start (on Tuesday). John Preiser put the ball in play, first pitch, and we didn't rebound. They were able to adjust and they did a good job.
"I told them short memory, learn from your mistakes, and move on."
What it means: Rye Neck remains unbeaten in league play and is in the driver's seat for a league title. Pleasantville will get a chance to even the series on Wednesday, but Rye Neck gets a leg up for the series.
Player of the game: Zach Strzalkowski, Rye Neck — He was solid behind the plate as catcher throughout all seven innings, and he provided the game-winning play to walk it off and bring home the win.
.@RNHSBaseball's Zach Strzalkowski provided the game-winning heroics in the bottom of the 7th, giving @RNHSathletics the 1-0 walkoff win over Pleasantville in a pivotal league matchup.

Goldman got the win in relief, giving up two hits and one walk, with two strikeouts over the final 2⅔ innings. Daniel Stone was 2-for-3 with a run scored. David Ryan and Julian Frabasile each had hits.
Pleasantville (9-4): Reed Supranowitz, Declan Bruder, Jack Van Sise and John Preiser each had hits. Supranowitz pitched the remainder of the game, giving up a run and two hits, with one strikeout. Charlie Bateman threw four shutout innings on Monday, with three hits and one walk allowed, and six strikeouts.
They said it
"Overall as a team, we can do stuff like this. One-run games in our past couple of games, but we just keep coming out on top, and I think down the line, it's going to be really important, especially in the playoffs, because we have to be able to win these one-run games. Today, Eli came in, did a good job, shut them down for us. We battled last inning, put a couple balls in play, and (Strzalkowski) hit a walk-off. Sucks we couldn't finish it yesterday, sometimes it's like that, but I'm glad we were able to come out with the win." -Rye Neck ace George Katsaros
"We had to play efficiently, play sharp. We usually wait until the seventh to get our runs, but we couldn't do that today. Energy from the jump, be loud in the dugout, and keep everything sharp." - Rye Neck catcher Zach Strzalkowski on preparing for a 3-inning sprint, as the game resumed on Tuesday
"We have a lot of guys who are very hungry to win, hungry to be together, and they want to make sure that they're doing the right thing each and every time they come out and play." - Pleasantville coach George LaMar on team's growth since going below-.500 last season to becoming a contender in Class B this year
.@RNHSBaseball's George Katsaros (@georgekatsaros0) set the tone in the first half of @RNHSathletics' game vs. Pleasantville.

Game recap: Kennedy Catholic 4, Iona Prep 3
SOMERS - It's always a battle to the bitter end whenever Kennedy Catholic and Iona Prep take the diamond, and Wednesday afternoon was no exception.
"We're two good teams and we always battle," Kennedy Catholic senior Jack Williams said of the Gael vs. Gael rivalry. "I say it's the best baseball in Westchester, the best you're going to get. It's always two good teams, two good pitchers, and always good competition."
When Kennedy Catholic and Iona Prep clash, no team can ever be counted out until the final out of the game.
Iona Prep gave Kennedy Catholic a seventh-inning scare with runners at the corners, but Kennedy was able to protect its home field as C.J. Griggs made a diving stop at first base to snag a hard-hit grounder and he took it to the bag himself to solidify the 4-3 win.
"We were lucky at the end there, they came back and it's a great team they have," Kennedy Catholic coach Bob Fletcher said. "We were very fortunate to get that last out. Griggs made a nice play. I thought it was going to be a base hit, but he made a nice play. They have an outstanding team, and we just hit the ball at the right time nad got the big hit when we needed it. Omar pitched very well, he didn't walk too many guys, which was key. (Omar's) last two outings, he seems to have his rhythm and confidence now. He did very well today."
Giret nearly went the distance, but hit the pitch count limit after 6⅔ innings and was relieved by Vince Cannizzaro.
Iona Prep had two runners in scoring position with one out and managed to get one runner across home plate on a wild pitch to cut the deficit to one, but Kennedy was able to fend off the threat.
"It was a good Catholic high school game, I thought Marcel (Kulik) did enough to win, but tip your hat to Kennedy," Iona Prep coach Ryan Mahoney said. "They got some hits when they needed to."
It was a back-and-forth game with a couple of lead changes early. Kennedy Catholic struck first thanks to a Chris Echols sacrifice fly RBI in the bottom of the second to give his team a 1-0 lead, but Iona Prep answered back in the following inning thanks to the game-tying RBI single from Devin Diaz and the go-ahead sacrifice fly RBI by Steve Dimovski put Iona Prep in front, 2-1, after three innings.
Those two runs in the third inning would be the only scoring plays Giret gave up for the entire game. Iona Prep entered Wednesday after scoring 29 runs throughout its previous two games, but the Kennedy Catholic senior was able to keep Iona Prep off-balanced.
"It's recognizing that it's a really good team over there, I'm not going to blow by them, I had to be crafty," Giret said. "Most of my stat lines have been trying to blow by teams a ton or getting ahead with the fastball, but there's a ton of great hitters over there so I tried to be unpredictable and crafty."
Kennedy Catholic changed the game with a three-run frame in the bottom of the fifth inning. With two runners in scoring position, Jack Williams got the game-tying RBI double into the left-field gap, and teammates Lorenzo Jorge and Lance Morgan also had RBIs.
Kennedy Catholic took a 4-2 lead after the surge and held on the rest of the way.
"Every year it's a really close game, they got a great team and so do we, it always comes down to the wire, one-point games," Kennedy Catholic catcher Ryan Strnad said. "We just brought a lot of energy today, and things just went in our favor because of that.
"Things started to click for our hitters (in that fifth inning), and it was just hit after hit. Guys doing their jobs, moving guys over, and it was just a really good team effort."
What it means: Another thrilling entry to add in the Gaels vs. Gaels rivalry, a showdown between two top-three lohud-ranked teams and two of the better teams in the CHSAA. This time, Kennedy Catholic emerged with the win.
It helped Kennedy get back on track, after a tough 2-1 loss to Cardinal Spellman on Monday, while Iona Prep's two-game winning streak comes to an end.
Player of the game: Omar Giret, Kennedy Catholic – He was scrappy and crafty on the mound. Even when Iona Prep snatched the lead early in the third inning, Giret was unfazed and buckled down to not allow anything else. He went 6⅔ innings with two earned runs and seven hits allowed, and three strikeouts.
Another quality outing for @kcgaelsbsbl's Omar Giret (@OmarGiret2024), who went 6.2 innings, with 2 earned runs, 7 hits allowed and 3 Ks, keeping Iona Prep off-balanced in @KennedyGaels' 4-3 win.

They said it
"I've been catching for Omar for two years now, and I have a good idea of his stuff and what works, and which pitches to use against certain guys, so I think everything has clicked these last couple of weeks, especially." -Kennedy Catholic catcher Ryan Strnad on his synergy with pitcher Omar Giret
"I had more than enough confidence in (Cannizzaro). He's been great coming back, this was his second time out after injury, and he's been really strong for us. All around the zone, he's very smart and he did a good job." -Kennedy Catholic pitcher Omar Giret on watching the suspenseful finish after being relieved before the final out due to pitch count limitations
"It's been that way all year. Some guys have have approaches and some guys struggle in certain spots, so we'll go back to work tomorrow and hopefully have a better result." -Iona Prep coach Ryan Mahoney on the team's offensive approach and execution on Wednesday.

Game recap: Putnam Valley 5, Croton-Harmon 1
CROTON-ON-HUDSON − With league rivals Putnam Valley and Croton-Harmon both unbeaten in league play, both teams were looking forward to their first meeting with one another.
That day finally came on Friday, which also marked Croton-Harmon's Senior Day. Unfortunately for the home crowd, visiting Putnam Valley spoiled the festivities, taking an early lead before finishing with a 5-1 victory.
It marked Putnam Valley's eighth win in 10 games, including its fifth-straight.
"This means a lot to me and my teammates, we were out there working every day, talking about this game for weeks," said Putnam Valley sophomore Aaron Pierre, who had a key two-run triple in the sixth inning. "We were so hyped up, locked in and I'm glad we got the win.
"That (early 2-0 lead) helped set the tone a lot. We just got the bats going, our pitching was on point, and as soon as we got the runs in, I knew our fielding could handle it."
Putnam Valley pounced on Croton-Harmon early, racing to a 2-0 lead from the first inning after a couple of Croton two-out errors.
The costly mistakes put Croton-Harmon in an early hole, but starting pitcher Andrew Kim was able to recover and not give up anything else, until Pierre had a big two-run triple in the top of the sixth to extend Putnam Valley's lead.
As for Croton, it was unable to crack the pitching of Putnam Valley junior Dominic Benedetto, who limited his opponent to just three hits for the entire game.
Croton was able to string together some momentum late and get on the board in the final inning, but Benedetto and Putnam Valley settled down and closed the game out, while Croton left two runners on base.
"Putnam Valley came to play, Benedetto threw a nice game," Croton coach Eric Rosen said. "They played clean baseball, for the most part, and got us quick. We just couldn't get the bats going, one run is not going to beat that team. Benedetto threw a nice game today, and sometimes that happens.
"We got to clean up some things defensively, and when you have a pitcher throw that good of a game, that stuff happens. We wish we could play tomorrow, but we play Tuesday at Put Valley again, so we gotta go to their place and hopefully turn the tables on them."
Outside of Pierre's two-run triple, Putnam Valley capitalized on a series of Croton errors to score its three other runs of the game.
After a shaky start to the season, where Putnam Valley only scored six runs over its first four games and had a 1-2-1 record to start the year, Putnam Valley is getting into a groove. It has the chance to capture the league title, outright, if it can beat Croton-Harmon in rematch and finish league play with a perfect record.
"The brotherhood with the team – we bond on the weekends, we're loud in the dugout, we pick each other up when we need to and we just continue to lift each other up," Putnam Valley senior Ricky Meister said of what's been behind his team's recent winning momentum. "It really started when our league play started. We've been 6-0 in league, and now, this just brought us up to 7-0. It really locked us in as a team and connected us together, and we're just going to continue to strive."
As for Croton, while it wasn't the result it wanted on Senior Day, it doesn't diminish the value of its three seniors – Mekhi Smithwick, Aidan Callahan and Korey DeBeer – to its program.
"I've had these guys for a long time," Rosen said of his senior trio. "I've had them since their freshman year on varsity, they were on the team right after the COVID-lost season. They came right up to varsity. We took our lumps together that first year. They're a big reason for the success we've had the past few years. We got to the section finals last year. The year before that, we had a lot of success, so they basically built it back up post-pandemic those three. A lot of hard work, and I give them a lot of credit for where we are today."
What it means: Putnam Valley has clinched at least a share of the league title, but if it can beat Croton-Harmon in the rematch on Tuesday, it can clinch it outright. If Croton-Harmon is able to win the rematch and even the season series, Croton-Harmon hopes for at least a share of the league title remain alive. Putnam Valley has now won five-straight, while Croton-Harmon suffers its first loss to a Class B opponent in nearly a month.
Player of the game: Dominic Benedetto, Putnam Valley – His complete-game effort was huge on the mound. He threw six shutout innings and kept Croton's bats at bay. Even when Croton started to string together some runners on base in an attempt to rally in the seventh-inning, Benedetto stayed poised and finished the job. Benedetto gave up one earned run on just three hits, while striking out six batters and walking four for the game.
"My approach was to kill them, strike as many out," Benedetto said of his mindset. "Beat them with the fastball, fool them with the curve or the slider."

By the numbers
Putnam Valley (9-4-1): Ricky Meister went 2-for-4, with two runs scored and he accounted for four of his team's seven stolen bases in the winning effort. James Sanford was 1-for-3 with two runs scored. Nick Mazzola scored a run and stole a base. Aaron Pierre went 1-for-3 with a triple and two RBIs.
Croton-Harmon (14-4): Aidan Callahan was 1-for-4 with a RBI. Max Fredman went 2-for-3. Owen Mintzer drew two walks and scored a run. Andrew Kim pitched for six innings, giving up two earned runs on four hits and four walks, while striking out four batters. Spencer Heath pitched the final inning, giving up one unearned run. Croton committed five errors as a team.
They said it
"We need to keep hitting how we're hitting. Beginning of the year, we weren't doing so well hitting, but now we're rolling." - Putnam Valley junior Dominic Benedetto
"Coming into this year, we were very hungry. We had a bad taste in our mouth, the way it ended (last year). We only graduated two seniors from last year, so the whole team has pretty much returned. We remembered how crappy that (section finals loss) was last year. It's our goal to make it back to that point and finish the job this year." - Croton-Harmon coach Eric Rosen

Game recap: New Rochelle 2, Panas 1 (8 innings)
CORTLANDT - New Rochelle was on the road at Panas on Saturday, but in some ways, the Huguenots fell right at home.
They've been in numerous tough situations throughout the season, but just as they've done as of late, with their backs against the wall, they found a way to persevere under pressure and find a way to overcome the obstacles in front of them.
New Rochelle trailed early, 1-0, in a low-scoring duel, but managed to push the game into extras and emerge on top with a 2-1 victory in eight innings.
"Amazing game, we got a great effort from our sophomore starter, Sam Cave," New Rochelle coach Claude Balliet said. "Brayden Casas came in relief and did his job, then our ace, Will Rangel, came in and got the save -- just kind of how we drew it up. Two huge RBIs from Zach Berenbaum, just overall, a really good game of baseball and fortunately, we came out on top against a really quality program."
Berenbaum, the Huguenots' senior first baseman, provided the game-tying RBI in the sixth inning to give New Rochelle a chance to salvage the game. He also provided the go-ahead RBI single, with two outs and a full-count, to put the Huguenots in front, 2-1, in the top of the eighth inning.
"I'm on top of it right now," Berenbaum said. "We stuck together through that whole game. We went slow through the first five, six innings, and we got some runners on base. I had one job -- get them in. Then, (eighth inning,) I had help from a teammate, I was on time and we got the big hit and got it through.
"The whole game, I was looking for a fastball. I just wasn't on time, until the big moment, where I was able to get my foot down and that's how it ended."

The win gave the Huguenots their fourth straight victory. New Rochelle had a rough month of April and lost seven of nine games at one point.
The Huguenots are getting into a groove now, though, and the timing couldn't be better with the postseason just around the corner. They've also demonstrated an ability to compete and remain poised in tough situations.
"Every game's a big game and winning four in a row going into other big games like Eastchester or into sectionals, it's really good," New Rochelle senior Will Rangel said. "It gets everyone's confidence back. Everyone that was struggling, came out today and hit good. Even the pitching has been amazing. I had to come out today and close it out, I did pretty good and did my job and my teammate, sophomore (Sam Cave), came out and shoved and now we got the 'W.'"
Panas had its opportunities, but was unable to muster the timely hit to expand on its lead or answer back when New Rochelle took the lead.
"The whole year, Alex (Enea) has been doing a great job, Ryan (Chenard's) been doing a great job, and the pitchers for the most part have been doing the job that we ask them to do," Panas coach Anthony Fata said. "We just got to get our bats clicking. With the pitching and defense that we've been executing this year, hopefully, we get hot at the right time."
The Panthers are coming off of a historic season, where they won their first section and regional titles and made it all the way to the Class A state finals. They graduated some key talent, including Gatorade Player of the Year Sam Stafura, who was drafted in the second round of the 2023 MLB Draft, but they had some returners and others stepping up to keep them a contender this year.
"We've been waiting to see what kind of identity this team has," Fata said. "We've shown that we can play good teams like Mahopac, Arlington. We play great against those teams, but the biggest thing is we haven't been clicking 1-9 in our lineup. The identity is this team can play. I really feel we have all the talent to be a team that can go far into the playoffs, it's just a matter of being consistent and executing each and every time we're on that field."
What it means: After winning its first two games, New Rochelle hit a rocky patch and lost seven of its next nine games. Things are clicking for the Huguenots, who have now won four-straight with Saturday's win. This streak includes a series of quality teams, like reigning Section 1 Class B champ and state final four participant Albertus Magnus, Harrison, Pearl River, and now, the defending Section 1 Class A champ and last year's state runner-up Panas.
The Panthers, who have had a solid season so far with a new-look squad that does feature some returners from last year's historic run, have had an overall solid season, but will need to regroup. They enjoyed back-to-back wins over Sleepy Hollow before Saturday, which helped them lock up another league title.
Player of the game: Zach Berenbaum, New Rochelle — The Huguenots' first baseman had two crucial RBIs in the winning effort. He had the game-tying RBI sac fly in the top of the sixth inning to tie things up at 1-1. Then he followed up with the go-ahead RBI single, with two outs and a full-count, to put New Rochelle in front, 2-1, in the top of the eighth inning.

By the numbers
New Rochelle (8-7): The Huguenots had strong performances on the mound, with Sam Cave starting things off by throwing six innings, with one earned run and seven hits allowed. He also had five strikeouts and no walks. Brayden Casas entered for the seventh inning and got the win in relief, giving up no hits or runs. Will Rangel closed things out for the save in the eighth-inning. Alejandro Rondon went 3-for-3 with a walk and scored a run. Tristan Paredes, Ryder Proudian, Will Rangel and Zach Berenbaum each had hits.
Panas (10-5): Alex Enea pitched six strong innings and gave up one earned run on three hits, while striking out four and walking four in the no-decision. Jordan Fiore was 2-for-4. Randy Wiesner scored a run. Gianni Generoso had a RBI double. Dean Sewall, Nick Caputo, Alex Enea, Josh Nauchmann and Matt Garcia each had hits. The Panthers had eight runners left on base for the game.
They said it
"This puts the cap on a huge week. We started off good, had a few rocky games after that, and this week is just amazing, especially to come off of a win like that to end the week too. ... All the things we've worked on are finally coming through in games. It's translating and we're winning big games now." -New Rochelle sophomore pitcher Sam Cave.
"Obviously, it's not how you start, it's how you finish. It's getting a little eerily similar to how last year went for us. We played a tough schedule on purpose. The schedule is still not getting any easier from here, but it's about getting hot at the right time and this was a huge week for us. It was really encouraging to see." -New Rochelle coach Claude Balliet on his team's four-game winning streak this week
"I told my kids at the end of the game, that was a good high school baseball game, and we just didn't capitalize with runners in scoring position. We left seven runners in scoring position. When you're facing a team like New Rochelle, you got to capitalize on what's presented to you. ... There's guys on this team who were part of that ride last year, and each and every day we practice or after games, we talk about getting back to that point. We know the journey's going to be tough. They accomplished their first goal, we won a league title which is great, and now we have to take the next step for the last five games of the season, play as best as we can, and put our best effort on the field. Got a mix of young kids and kids with experience and we got to put it all together. If we put it all together, we'll be a tough out." - Panas coach Anthony Fata.
