Pleasantville 8, Westlake 2 (league game): On Break The Hold night, the Panthers got the win over league rival Westlake, but also raised $1,036 for mental health awareness.
The Break The Hold foundation advocates for suicide prevention and mental health awareness. The death of 2017 Pleasantville graduate Brian Halloran, inspired the creation of the Break The Hold foundation, which was named to bear his initials. He was 19 years old and a freshman at the University of South Carolina at the time of his death.
Break The Hold has a large presence in Pleasantville, and regularly partners with the school for educational programming, as well as athletic fundraisers throughout the year.

Game recap: Harrison 10, Mamaroneck 3
MAMARONECK - Harrison might've graduated a big senior class after last year — a group that included seven starters — but the word "rebuild" isn't in the Huskies' vocabulary.
They expected some growing pains along the way, but after a 2-3 start to the season with a new-look team, it appears the Huskies are getting into a groove. On Tuesday, they earned their fifth-straight victory, a 10-3 win at Mamaroneck to open league play.
"We said from the beginning, we don't rebuild, we reload and that's been our mentality since day one," Harrison coach Marco DiRuocco said. "These guys are very athletic, they're very talented, they just didn't have varsity experience. Going in, I wasn't sure exactly what to expect and we had some bumps in the road early on for sure, and I expected that, I just asked all of them to improve each and every day, learn from their mistakes and continue to grow as a team. They've taken that to an entire level and our games have just been complete, true team efforts. They're a relentless group and I'm so proud of the way they're playing."
Relentless is a good way to describe their performance against the Tigers. Upon grabbing the lead from the top of the first inning, the Huskies never trailed at any point of the wire-to-wire victory. They scored at least one run in four of the seven innings, including a five-run surge in the top of the seventh to put the game out of reach.
"We had a lot of clutch timing, and I think that's very important that we were able to get the clutch hits today with runners on," Harrison senior Dante Lanza said. "As long as we keep the sticks going, and keep having good approaches at the plate, we're gonna produce runs."
The high-scoring outing by the Huskies was highlighted by a big two-run home run from Michael Olsey, who launched one over the left field fence after a double by teammate Jackson Schiro.
"I was getting a couple of balls and I waited for the perfect pitch, and I just hit it," said Olsey, with a grin.
During Harrison's winning streak, the Huskies grinded out close wins against the likes of Fox Lane, Clarkstown South, Rye Neck and Scarsdale, but Tuesday was less suspenseful.
Keni Franck kept the Tigers at bay on the mound, while hits and plays came from all areas of the Huskies' lineup.
"I think we're starting to get there, but there's obviously more kinks in the road," Franck said of his team's progress this season. "We're a young team, but we got a really competitive group of guys. A great group of guys — we've all been playing together since we were young, so once that starts clicking, we're going to get going and we're going to take off."
Mamaroneck strung together some momentum in the bottom of the sixth, scoring twice and closing the gap to make it a 5-3 deficit. The Tigers' rally came to a screeching halt with two runners on, when a hard-hit grounder inadvertently hit a baserunner attempting to dash to third base.
"First inning, we made two quick errors right away," Mamaroneck coach Mike Chiapparelli said. "Two balls we should've made outs on and they got a run, then we came out and walked the first guy the next inning. (Harrison) got some big hits in good spots. That (fifth-inning) home run was big too. We threw them an outside changeup and he got it and hooked it."
The Tigers were unable to get over the hump. After letting one slip away in extras against reigning state champ Ketcham, Mamaroneck didn't get the result it wanted in its first game back since.
"We're underachieving, we got to get better," Chiapparelli said of his post-game message to the team. "Had a huge game on Saturday, then we didn't come and play the same way. We want our kids to be hungry, want to go out and make plays. There were probably three or four plays that we didn't make that we should've made and that really hurt us. We got Carmel tomorrow and we need to be better tomorrow or we're gonna get beat again."
What it means: The Huskies are heating up and start league play on the right foot. Harrison has won five straight games, with Tuesday's outing being the most emphatic of the bunch. Their first four wins during their current win streak came by two or fewer runs, so there was less suspense. They've shown comfort in a variety of situations. As for Mamaroneck, it has now lost back-to-back games.
Player of the game: Keni Franck, Harrison — There were plenty of contributors in the win, but Franck was tough on the mound. The southpaw was crafty in the winning effort, pitching six solid innings, with one earned run allowed and two hits, with seven strikeouts. Even as Mamaroneck threatened near the end of his start in the sixth inning, he battled and kept his team in front.
By the numbers
Harrison (7-3): Dante Lanza went 2-5, with three RBIs and two runs scored. He also came in relief and pitched the final inning to close it out. Jackson Schiro was 2-for-3 with a double and two runs scored. Michael Olsey went 1-for-3 with a two-run home run. Brady Ross was 2-for-4 with a RBI. Evan Schwartz had a double and a RBI, while Jacob Marriott, Nick Gabie and Sam Rosmarin each had a RBI.
Mamaroneck (3-4-1): It is the Tigers' second loss to a Section 1 opponent, with the other being Ketcham. Graham Williams had a RBI sac fly. One of the Tigers' runs came on a passed ball, and another came on an error. Gabe Roland and Michael Pagan each had hits.
They said it
"Baseball you keep going, you gotta forget that game and play the next one. We need to come ready to play (against Carmel)." - Mamaroneck coach Mike Chiapparelli
"They're an absolute pleasure. I love being around these young men. They're so well-behaved, so disciplined and they take everything we tell them. They take it to another level and they're so receptive and sold on our program. Our core values are always hustle, number one, we before me is number two, and number three is stay in line on and off the field. They've done a phenomenal job with that and they're just such a great group. I'm so proud of them, we just got to keep it going." - Harrison coach Marco DiRuocco

Game recap: Iona Prep 6, Fordham Prep 2
NEW ROCHELLE - On a team loaded with college-committed players, Iona Prep has plenty of talent in all areas of their batting order and pitching rotation, so what's impressed Gaels coach Ryan Mahoney the most?
"It's a different guy every game," Mahoney said. "Someone steps up or gets a big hit. Today, Tim Denet got that double down the line which was huge. Ryan Bailey started (the hitting), so to not have to rely on one guy is nice. They kind of pick each other up throughout the game."
The Gaels flirted with a combined no-hitter that went into the final inning, before visiting Fordham Prep was able to get a couple of desperate hits. Iona Prep held on for the 6-2 win, with both of the Rams' runs occurring earlier on in unearned fashion.
More importantly, Iona Prep remained undefeated and improved to 8-0, in a game where the Gaels took on a scrappy Fordham Prep team, unpleasant weather conditions and overcame some untimely miscues and errors.
"I thought we played great," Saint Joseph's commit and Iona Prep pitcher Matt Fitzgibbon said. "Timely plays when we needed big plays, good pitching when we needed good pitching, and the offense was there today. All-around performance."
The Gaels had a 4-2 lead through four innings, when LeMoyne commit Tim Denet doubled down the line and sent two runners home to pad Iona Prep's lead.
Despite not getting a single hit until late in the seventh inning, Fordham Prep threatened at various points of the game, getting runners on through walks or errors and moving them around.
When it mattered most, the Gaels defense would muster a key defensive play or Marcel Kulik and Matt Fitzgibbon would get a momentum-shattering strikeout or get their batter to fly out to dispel any threat from the Rams.
Fordham Prep would finally break through with a couple of its in the seventh inning, but Iona Prep didn't let the Rams cross home.
The Gaels have won in a variety of ways throughout their undefeated start, and they have outscored opponents 65-8 in CHSAA play.
After finishing as CHSAA runner-ups last year, they are determined to win it all this year.
"Last season, we had a lot of good players, we made it all the way to the championship," Denet said. "We played well, but this year, we want just to do more. It's like a bucket list. This is what we want this year, and we're going to get it done."
Player of the game: There were many players that chipped into this win. While Kulik and Fitzgibbon kept the Rams hitless for 6.1 innings, they got some key defensive plays behind them and some timely hits and scoring from different parts of their lineup.
By the numbers
Iona Prep (9-0): Devin Diaz had three RBIs. Tim Denet went 1-for-3 with a double and two RBIs. Julian Guzman was 2-for-2 with three runs scored. Ryan Bailey was 1-for-2 with a double, walk and run scored. Andrew DiSanto had a sac fly RBI. Dylan Merola also had a hit. Marcel Kulik got the win on the mound, pitching four innings with one earned run and no hits allowed, while striking out two batters and walking six. Matt Fitzgibbon pitched the final three innings and allowed no runs, no walks and two hits, while striking out three batters.
Fordham Prep (3-3): Jack McKillop had a double and Matt Herlick had a single in the final inning. Lucas DeJesus scored both runs for the Rams, once on an error and the other off of a Christian Quiambo ground out RBI. Joaquin Del Pino pitched the first three innings, giving up two earned runs on four hits and a walk. Will Bracchitta pitched the final three innings and gave up two earned runs on one hit and two walks, while striking out four batters.
They said it
"We talk about winning every pitch," Mahoney said of his team's winning mentality. "It might be cliche, but it's really important. There's going to be miscues, opportunities for the other team, but if we can win every pitch and win every inning, we should have a chance to be in every game. Also, our league is tough, so you have to show up every day."

Game recap: Kennedy Catholic 5, Stepinac 3
WHITE PLAINS - Whenever Kennedy Catholic and Stepinac take the diamond, you can always expect a gem of a game that always comes down to the wire.
The Gaels led from the first inning and never trailed, but a scrappy Stepinac team battled to keep the game close and interesting nearly every step of the way.
Stepinac had a pair of runners on base at the end, but Kennedy Catholic neutralized the threat to hang on for a 5-3 win on Friday afternoon.
"It was a well-played game all the way around," Kennedy Catholic coach Bob Fletcher said. "We had some good, timely hitting today, which lately, we've been leaving guys on base and today we were able to get those couple of runs in that we needed and we played really good defense, except for the one little miscue at the end. Omar (Giret) pitched a very good game. He got the outs when he needed and got the outs when he was in trouble."
It was a feel-good win for the Gaels. Last year, they lost both meetings to the Crusaders in heartbreaking fashion, with both games concluding with a 3-2 score and both battles decided in the final inning each time.
"We just wanted our revenge for (last year)," said Kennedy Catholic's Vince Cannizzaro, who belted a fifth-inning home run in the winning effort.
Down 5-2 entering the sixth inning, Stepinac threatened by loading up the bases with no outs. The Gaels were able to minimize the damage and let just one Crusader runner reach home, and Kennedy Catholic was able to prevent further trouble.
Stepinac got a couple of runners on in the final inning, but the Gaels were able to close out and get the win.
"It's always been what a lot of Stepinac teams have been," Stepinac senior Wally Briganti said of his team's scrappiness. "Even if we're young, just looking back at last year, we won a lot of games on baserunning, defense, with good hits. If we can harness that, that would be really helpful for the playoffs. Just got to make sure we keep playing hard, doing what we can, let the hits fall, and let our baserunning, defense, pitching keep us in the game always."
Expectations were unclear entering this season following some key departures, but Kennedy Catholic's hunger for success has always remained.
The Gaels had a strong push to end the 2022-23 season, and that momentum has carried over to this year's team, as they continue to run with the torch passed onto them from those that came before them.
Kennedy Catholic is now 8-1 in CHSAA play and it has won seven straight.
"We've had good leadership from the beginning, walking around with a chip on their shoulder," Giret said. "Many people will say we don't have what we have like last year, but I'm here to tell you that we do.
"It's that underdog mentality. People are saying we lost our guy, our pitcher, guys like Adam (Agresti), and all other players like that, but we walk around with that underdog mentality. We take each game one by one, inning by inning, and try to win the inning and try to win the games."
Players of the game: Omar Giret, Kennedy Catholic, and Wally Briganti, Stepinac — Giret was tough on the mound. Even after giving up a leadoff home run, he settled down and didn't allow much else in the winning effort. He remained unfazed in some tough situations and gave up just two runs on four hits, while striking out seven batters in five innings of action.
As for Briganti, he was a bright spot for the Crusaders in the loss. The senior catcher and leadoff hitter finished 2-for-3 with a walk, two RBIs and a solo home run to start the game. He also threw out a runner attempting to steal in the final inning.
By the numbers
Kennedy Catholic (8-1): Ryan D'Ambrosio went 2-for-4 with a double and a RBI. He also pitched the last two innings, giving up one run on two hits. Vince Cannizzaro was 1-for-2 with two walks, a run scored, one RBI and a solo home run. C.J. Griggs got a hit, while Eli Negron scored two runs and stole a base. Lance Morgan scored one run and stole one base.
Stepinac (4-6): Aside from Briganti, Aiden LaSalle was 2-for-3 with a RBI. Bryce Chatman, Michael Otsuni and James Donahue each had a hit. Cedric Rice pitched 2⅔ innings, with two earned runs and three hits allowed. Shea O'Sullivan pitched 2⅓ innings, with one earned run and one hit allowed. Mike Weninger threw the final two innings and didn't give up any runs or hits, and got two strikeouts.
They said it
"They've played well. They really gel together more than I originally thought. We have the bats, and it's just a matter of the experience, and they seem to be playing pretty good together and more cohesively. It's a good group of kids. It all depends on pitching, that's been our Achilles, but it's been better than I thought. ... I would say our hitting has been most impressive. One of the better hitting teams I've had in years. Normally, we're known for our pitching and having a good staff. This year, it's been our hitting. Our pitching staff has done well, better than I initially expected, but hitting is more of our forte this year." -Kennedy Catholic coach Bob Fletcher on his team's progression and evolution this season
.@kcgaelsbsbl's Omar Giret was tough on the mound in his start against Stepinac.
