High school baseball roundup: Sturgis battles back to tie with big inning

STURGIS — The Sturgis baseball team played to a split with visiting Bronson on Saturday.

The Vikings won a pitcher's battle in the opener, 1-0, while Sturgis came back to win the second game 6-2.

Sturgis struggled at the plate in the opening game, striking out a dozen times as a team. Sturgis' Taner Patrick did all he could to keep his team in the game on the mound with seven strikeouts himself.

"Again our pitching has kept us in games. We are still struggling to piece together hits and produce some runs," Sturgis coach Drew Rutenbar said. "Taner hasn't been on the mound in a little while and he did everything we asked of him, 12 strikeouts makes it hard to win ball games."

Logan Markey collected the lone hit for the Trojans in the game.

Bronson got two hits from James Jourdan. Carson Stevens hit a double while Dawson Soergel, Warner Wotta, Kestin Goodman and Matt Arver each had a base hit.

Sturgis broke a 2-2 tie in the fifth inning with four runs in the second game. It helped them win, 6-2.

Carter Oswald connected for three hits in this game, Camden Duffy registered a pair of hits and drove in four total runs. Gibson Cary and Patrick both had a run-scoring hit for the Trojans.

Duffy struck out two in the win. Zach Green struck out five in relief.

Bronson got two hits from Stevens and Wotta in the game.

The White Pigeon baseball team lost 19-3 to Union City in the Darmofal Invitational on Saturday. Bristol Ultz had two hits and Clayton Grandstaff added one. Union City beat White Pigeon in the opening game 8-2 before the Chiefs won 13-0 over Colon in the next game. Brody Block tossed a no hitter in the game, striking out 10. Ultz and Devon Smith each had a base hit while Grandstaff added a pair of hits. White Pigeon then beat Union City 10-8 to force a winner take all game. Ultz singled twice and Block tripled.

Three Rivers beat Buchanan twice on the baseball diamond on Friday. The Cats picked up wins of 11-1 and 6-5 on the day. Peyton Hradsky struck out four to win the first game, Drake Graver won the second with three strikeouts. Luis Warmack had two hits and drove in three runs in the sweep, Jace Gray drove in a pair with a couple of hits. Hradsky and Carson Beuter each collected three hits.

Centreville and Constantine split a pair of games on Saturday. The Bulldogs won 10-6 in the second game, Constantine won the first 10-4. Cash Dentler had two hits for Centreville in the first game with one run knocked in. Vinny Jines connected for two hits as well. Constantine got a pair of hits from Brody Godfrey with two RBIs and Dathan Smith with one run knocked in. Gaven Lewis pitched six strikeouts in the win for the Falcons. Austin Forrester and Godfrey knocked in four runs combined in the second game with five hits, Godfrey hit a home run. Centreville got three hits from Dentler, Bo Riley and Landon Bingaman each had two hits.

In prep softball action, Colon beat White Pigeon 6-2 and Athens 7-0 to win the Darmofal Invitational. Reese Williams and Peighton Stouder each hit a pair of hits for the Magi in the win over White Pigeon. Alyssa Hess struck out eight to pick up the win. Against Athens, Hess struck out seven to win. Amaya Johnson and Stouder each connected for three hits in the win.

Centreville girls win SW10 team title

Burr Oak beat North Adams 21-2 on Friday. Despite scoring 21 runs, Burr Oak had only two hits in the game. Braylyn Hernandez hit a single and Brooklynn Root hit a double. Burr Oak registered 14 walks in the game. Root struck out one in an inning of work, Hernandez struck out three as well.

On Saturday, Three Rivers won two of three games. The Wildcats beat St. Joseph 10-0 and Coloma 6-3 but dropped an 8-7 decision to Lakeshore. Allie McGlothlen hit a home run for the Cats against St. Joseph while Dani Glass, London Hoffmaster and Peyton Ware each had three hits. Jennaya Decker picked up the win. Against Coloma, Ava Forman, Ware and Hoffmaster each had RBI hits. Ware struck out five to get the win. The loss to Lakeshore saw Emily Ventrone, Forman and Hoffmaster each collect two hits.

White Pigeon went 1-1 at Colon. The Chiefs dropped their first game to Colon, 6-2, but won the second, beating Bellevue 12-2. Keigha Shudell, Cali Raley and Rachel Byler all had hits for the Chiefs in the first one. In the second game, they totaled 12 hits. Shudell had three singles with two RBIs, Emily Miller added two singles with a double and two RBIs. Layla Abner scored two with a pair of hits, Raley hit a single and a triple. Emily Barton and Byler both hit a single.
