Baseball Recap: Union City sweeps White Pigeon, Bronson drops two at Hanover

WHITE PIGEON, MI. - The Union City varsity baseball squad continues to show early season promise as the Charger “9” traveled to White Pigeon Saturday for a non-conference double header.

Union City was dominant in both phases of the game, scoring a combined 19 runs on 20 hits while also shutting out the Chiefs in both games, only allowing a combined two hits throughout the two game set.

Game one of the twin bill saw Union City defeat White Pigeon by the score of 3-0 as the pitching duo of Ryan Zweng and Eli Payne combined to allow only one hit in the game.

Zweng took the win on the mound after throwing four and two-thirds of an inning, walking three while striking out 11 batters. Eli Payne came in to secure the Save, throwing two innings and a third, allowing one hit with one walk and five strikeouts.

Leading the Union City offense was Owen “OJ” Jackson with a triple and a run scored; Zweng with a walk, an RBI and a run scored; Aidan Decker with a single and an RBI; Tyler “Wags” Wagley with a double and a walk; Luke Watson with a double; Jakob “Fozzy” Fosmore with a single; Eli Payne with a single and a walk; and Luke Fletcher with a walk.

Game two of the doubleheader saw Union City continue to shut down the Chiefs on defense while the offense exploded, putting up 16 runs on 14 hits while only allowing a single hit in the 16-0 win.

Union City scored three runs in the first inning, seven in the second, four in the third and two in the fourth for their 16 runs.

Luke Watson secured the win on the mound for Union City, throwing three innings in the start, allowing only one hit with seven strikeouts. Eli Payne came in to pitch in relief, throwing two-thirds of an inning.

Phoenix Elkins led the Union City offensive attack as he finished 3 for 3 with two singles, a triple, one walk, four RBIs and three runs scored.

Ryan Zweng also had a big game at the plate, finishing 3 for 3 with two singles and a triple, one RBI and four runs scored.

Also adding to the Union City offensive output was Owen Jackson with two singles and two runs; Luke Fletcher with a single and a run scored; Aidan Decker with a single, an RBI and two runs scored; Tyler Wagley with four walks and a run scored; Luke Watson with a double, two RBIs and a run scored; Eli Payne with a double, two RBIs and a run scored; and Jakob Fosmore with a single, a walk, an RBI and a run scored.

With their successful weekend sweep Union City improves to 6-3 overall on the year. The Chargers will be back in action on Tuesday when they travel to Reading to continue their Big 8 schedule versus the Rangers.

Bronson baseball drops two at Hanover Horton Invite 

HANOVER, MI. - The Bronson Vikings traveled to Hanover Horton on Saturday for invitational baseball action, coming away with two tough losses as the Viking bats went quiet in a scoreless weekend.

To kick off the weekend it was Bronson falling to a very good Clinton team by the score of 10-0.

Clinton scored one run in the first inning, one in the second, three in the third and five in the fourth for their 10 runs as the Vikings were out hit 8-2 in the contest.

Carson Stevens took the loss on the mound for Bronson, throwing three innings while allowing seven hits and eight runs, six earned, with two walks and five strikeouts.

Dawson Soergel pitched an inning in relief, giving up one hit and two runs.

Offensively Bronson was led by Logan Long and James Jourdan, both of whom knocked out singles. Seth Withington also recorded a walk.

Bronson also fell in game two of the tournament by the score of 12-0.

James Jourdan took the loss on the mound after throwing two innings, allowing nine hits and 12 runs, five earned, with one walk and one strikeout.

Owen Kimmons pitched two innings of solid relief, allowing four hits and no runs with three strikeouts.

Bronson’s offense was again held largely silent, only notching two hits as Ashton Wells and Dawson Soergel each had a single. Spencer Losinski added a walk for the Vikings.

Bronson falls to 1-7 on the season with the two losses and will next see action Tuesday when they travel to Jonesville to continue their Big 8 conference schedule.
