Baseball playoffs: Tallahassee NFC strikes late to deny St. Joseph in regional semifinal

St. Joseph's playoff run ended two games short of the final four.

Ace Walker hit a go-ahead two-run double in the bottom of the sixth inning and Tallahassee North Florida Christian (19-6-2) escaped 2-0 to overcome a gritty effort from St. Joseph in Saturday night's Florida High School Athletic Association Region 1-2A baseball semifinal.

Sean Miskowiec went the distance for the Flashes (20-9), striking out 10 and allowing four hits in the defeat.

After two St. Joseph singles in the first, NFC pitchers Garrett Workman, Jace Riggan and Walker Sparkman combined to retire 20 consecutive batters.

North Florida Christian advanced to Tuesday's regional championship at St. Johns Country Day.

CLASS 7A REGIONAL FINAL PREVIEW

Creekside (19-10) at Timber Creek (23-6), 7 p.m. Monday

Creekside's balanced batting order and deep pitching staff keep powering forward, with Parker Morton's three-run double making the difference last time out. Timber Creek strikes out more than a batter per inning with a pitching trio of Brody Juntunen (8-1, 1.52), Brian Kendall (9-1, 1.23) and Connor Mulready (9-1, 1.23). The Wolves nearly exited the playoffs on Friday against Spruce Creek, but survived thanks to an Eli Buffaloe home run to narrow the gap in the sixth inning and a two-run walk-off shot in the bottom of the seventh. The winner advances to the FHSAA final four in Fort Myers on Friday against an opponent to be determined.
