Barrington-Cranston West boys volleyball had that postseason feel

BOYS VOLLEYBALL

Division II

Barrington 3, Cranston West 2

The boys volleyball postseason hasn’t started, but Monday they certainly felt like they arrived.

Barrington traveled to take on Cranston West in a battle of Division II’s top two teams. With the potential for the top seed on the line, the Eagles and Falcons put on a playoff-worthy show. Barrington started slow, picked up steam and when an injury threatened to derail its chances, the Eagles found a way to battle through it in a 22-25, 25-20, 25-18, 16-25, 15-10 win over Cranston West.

“They took it to us last time,” said Barrington’s Sang Min Park, referencing the Falcons’ sweep on April 20. “We weren’t ready for them last time. This time we prepared for them.”

Cranston West was equally prepared and just out first, building a lead in the first set before holding off a Barrington comeback in the 25-22 opening-set win.

The Eagles got in a groove in the second and continued to shine in the third set before star outside hitter Cameron Kelly landed awkwardly and turned his ankle late in the set. Barrington was able to finish it off, but – as Kelly tried to tape and re-tape the ankle to see if he could get back on the court – had no rhythm in the fourth set.

But the Eagles stepped up in a big way in the fifth. They got contributions from all over the court, including a couple big hits by Zayan Azman, Luke Andsager and Jimmy Ciummo to help close out the match.

“We just came in here as a team,” Ciummo said. “I knew we had to compete and that’s what we did today.”

Maddox Godwin led Barrington with 17 kills and 13 digs and Park had 46 assists. Ciummo added five kills and four blocks for the Eagles, who need to win one of their final two matches – at Pilgrim Tuesday or home vs. East Providence Thursday – to lock up the No. 1 seed for the D-II playoffs.

“It’s going to be crucial for us to finish strong and keep marching along to the playoffs and championship, hopefully,” Park said. “There’s things we need to work on, things we saw today that we can improve on.”

Cranston West is guaranteed a top-two seed even with the loss. It will finish its regular season next Wednesday at home against Westerly.
