Fans tuned in to Sunday’s Group C opener expecting a striker to put on a show. That happened, all right, just not the striker everyone expected.

Barbara Bonansea’s two second-half goals, including a last-gasp winner, helped Italy surprise Australia 2-1 in Valenciennes, France.

Italy won a free kick on the right wing deep into injury time, and Valentina Cernoia floated a free kick to the far post where Bonansea tracked it down:

Sam Kerr gave Australia a lead midway through the first half by following up her own penalty miss. But Kerr, the star 25-year-old striker who many expect to have a breakout performance in France this summer, was largely limited by the Italian defense.

Australia’s defending, on the other hand, left plenty to be desired. Bonansea nearly scored in the ninth minute but was ruled offside, and she pounced on a poor touch by Australia’s Clare Polkinghorne to knot the score early in the second half:

Italy is making its first appearance at the Women’s World Cup in 20 years. If Bonansea and Co. keep playing like this, they could stay there awhile.
