GALESBURG — Beau Admire, owner of Badger Combatives, says he can help people feel safer.

"We live in scary times and Galesburg and the surrounding areas are no exception to this," Admire said. "We teach a realistic self defense system for real world situations. We train all of our students in boxing and kickboxing style striking. We drill many different self defense scenarios for the student to learn how to deal with these possible situations. This builds confidence in our students and helps prepare them for possible threats."

Admire and his wife, Sammy, have run the self-defense business for six years. For the first three years, Badger Combatives was located in Abingdon. The last three years, the martial arts school has been located at 313 E. Main Street, Galesburg.

Admire has a few tips when it comes to personal safety, the first tip includes training.

"Find a coach that will help you become prepared. The most basic tip is situational awareness. We live in a world where we are distracted by our phones. This can place us in dangerous situations that could have been avoided if we watched what was going on around us and who was around us," explained Admire.

"We have a saying at our gym. Are you trained or untrained? You can't hope to do well in a self-defense situation if you aren't trained," he added.

Admire says he began training at age 4 with his father and trained in many styles throughout the years. Admire received black belts in several styles of martial arts, was a Pro MMA fighter and ran an OSE mixed martial arts gym for 10 years.

Admire said he created Badger Combatives because he wanted to put together a realistic style that would work in real world situations that occur on the street.

"It's not like traditional styles with all the jumping and flashy unrealistic movements. It's a style with the thought of a real fight and how people really fight," he said in the previous article.

Badger Combatives offer toddler martial arts classes for ages 4 to 5 year olds. Beginner kids self-defense for ages 6 to 12 are also offered and adult self-defense covers ages 12 and up.

"We also have several different times for our women's cardio kickboxing/ fitness classes. Something new to our schedule is our homeschool kids self defense/ fitness class and our homeschool teen self defense/ fitness class. We also hold women's self defense seminars quarterly as well," Admire said.

What does the coach enjoy most when it comes to teaching the classes offered?

"I enjoy empowering my students and giving them the confidence to really defend themselves. When I helped teach tradition martial arts at other gyms years ago with their instructors, I knew the students enjoyed classes but they were not preparing them for real self defense. So, when I started this gym I was never going to mislead my students. They were going to really be able to defend themselves unlike if they trained in traditional martial arts."

Coach Admire and his family live outside of Abingdon.
