Carson Voss always figured he could take classes at Michigan State and try to join the football program as a walk-on if no schools reached out to him during his time in the transfer portal.

But what he figured was just a backup plan wound up becoming the top option for the 2021 Dansville graduate and former Western Michigan punter.

And it came when Voss was least expecting it.

Voss was with family celebrating his grandfather's 80th birthday on a Sunday afternoon earlier this month when he received a call from the MSU staff to offer him a spot as a preferred walk-on. He jumped at the opportunity and is now officially part of the Spartan program as a mid-year transfer.

"Up until that point I hadn't heard from any coaches," Voss said. "I was just planning on taking classes at (Lansing Community College) while I'm in the portal and continuing my degree. They just called me (at the) last minute and it all worked out perfectly. All of that week was pretty hectic with getting into classes and all that type of stuff. It was all bang, bang, bang and then all of the sudden I'm working out with the team."

It has been a dream scenario for Voss over the past few weeks as he has settled in at the school he's always rooted for and where he's attended plenty of games. He's a Spartan now.

Voss joins MSU after spending three seasons at Western Michigan. After not playing his first two years in Kalamazoo, Voss served as the primary punter for the Broncos last fall. He averaged 39.6 yards on his 48 punts, with a long of 55 yards.

MSU returns sophomore punter Ryan Eckley, who averageed 46.7 yards per punt as a freshman last fall and was named a Freshman All-American by the Football Writers Association of America and was a second team All-Big Ten pick by the coaches and media.

Voss earned his shot at Western thanks to rapid growth after taking a serious approach to punting during the spring of his junior year at Dansville. He believes his growth has been even more significant the past few years while emerging as the Broncos' starter.

Now Voss, who has two seasons of eligibility remaining, is taking on a new challenge and trying to make his mark at his dream school.

"I hope to take my opportunity to play and help the team in any way that I can," Voss said. "If that doesn't work out, I still want to be able to be there for the team and help them in any way. I don't know what's going to happen. I'm just leaving it all up to God. My plan is to just go in there and get better every single day and do whatever I can for the team."
