Austin sophomore wins section championship in pair of events in boys swimming

Feb. 24—LAKEVILLE — Austin sophomore Brent Dahl won a pair of individual championships during the Section 1, Class 1A boys swimming and diving meet which concluded on Friday.

Dahl and Zach Evenson both earned state berths in four events overall for the Packers, in two individual events and in two relays.

Dahl won individual titles in the 500 freestyle and the 200 individual medley during Friday's championship finals. His time of 4:47.48 in the 500 was an Austin all-time record.

Evenson earned individual state berths in the two freestyle sprint events, the 50 and the 100. He was the runner-up in both events.

Dahl and Evenson teammed with Hunter Peters and Lucas Myers in both state-qualifiying relays. The foursome placed third in both the 200 medley and 400 freestyle relays. The top three in each swimming event earned state berths as well as any swimmer reaching a pre-set time standard.

Red Wing sophomores Zachary Mikkelson and Laden Nelson placed first and second in diving to earn state berths. Mikkelson repeated as the section champ and his score of 472.20 was 99 points better than Nelson's.

Ethan Ihrke was part of two state berths for Red Wing. He qualified in the 100 butterfly by placing third. In the 200 freestyle relay, he teammed with Ezra Dennis, Gavin Magill and Elijah Flattum to finish third.

Winona freshman Cordel Ruppert earned state berths in a pair of individual events. He placed second in the 500 freestyle and finished third in the 200 freestyle.

Matthew Baumgartner also earned a state berth for the Winhawks. He finished third in the100 breaststroke.

The Class 1A state swimming and diving meet will be held Feb. 29-March 2 at the University of Minnesota Aquatic Center.
