Augusta winter all-area teams: Middleton leads long list of boys basketball honorees
It was another high school basketball season for the history books around Augusta.
Not only did Westside clinch its third-straight Georgia High School Association Class 2A state championship, but several other programs went deep into the postseason. Under new head coach Chaz Clark, Butler fell to eventual 2A runner-up Toombs County. Grovetown and Cross Creek also grabbed region championships and Elite Eight appearances in 6A and 3A, respectively.
In the South Carolina Independent School Association, Augusta Christian came one win shy of a three-peat in Class 4A while Curtis Baptist secured the Class A title.
The talent still continues to improve in the basketball hotbed that is Augusta. What's remarkable about this year is the number of stellar players in the honorable mention section. Turnover to graduation and transfers hasn't slowed the CSRA down one bit when it comes to the depth of these teams.

Player of the year
Demarco Middleton, Westside
Middleton capped his high school basketball career in dramatic fashion, securing a third-straight GHSA state championship. The senior guard was there every step of the way and, in many ways, proved to be a beacon of the future of the program. Beyond his skill and otherworldly court vision, perhaps Middleton’s biggest contribution was his leadership. He allowed the younger players to grow on the floor, just like past players did for him. Middleton’s leadership may have a hand in a few more state titles well after he’s advanced to the college level.
