Auburn in the NFL: Week 1 Recap

Each week throughout the NFL season, Auburn Wire will take a look at some of the most notable performances from Auburn Alumni across the League.

Week 1 of the NFL season featured plenty of big-time performances from former Tigers. Some of those who had stellar games include Tank Bigsby, Noah Igbinoghene, Anders and Daniel Carlson, Derrick Brown, and Carlton Davis.

Here are some of the best we saw in the first week of the NFL season.

Former Auburn running back Tank Bigbsy had an eventful debut for the  Jacksonville Jaguars on Sunday.

The second round pick was poised to be a big part of the game plan after a solid preseason, and he was in fact featured plenty during the Jaguars 31-21 win over the Colts.

While Bigby was only on the field for 15 of the Jaguars 70 offensive snaps, (Jaguars starting running back Travis Etienne played 51/70 snaps), Bigsby’s usage rate was high.

Tank carried the ball 7 times, picking up 13 yards and a touchdown. Most of those snaps came inside the red zone, including this highlight that set up his eventual touchdown run.

Cornerback Noah Igbinoghene has had a less-than-ideal start to this NFL career.

After getting drafted by the Miami Dolphins in the first round of the 2020 NFL draft, Igbinoghene played sparingly with the team, collecting just 29 tackles and 1 interception in three seasons.

Still just 23 years old, the former Auburn corner is now a special teamer on the Dallas Cowboys.

He made sure everyone knew he had joined Dallas on the opening drive of Sunday Night Football, taking a blocked field goal all the way back for six.

For the first time in almost a decade, the Auburn Tigers do not have a kicker with the last name Carlson on their roster.

Daniel and Anders are now both kicking in the league, and they both started off their seasons well in week one.

The older of the two brothers and now NFL veteran Daniel Carlson had a modest-yet-important day for his Las Vegas Raiders, making his lone field goal attempt and drilling 2 extra points.

The second of his extra points would be the eventual game winner in the Raiders’ 17-16 win over the Denver Broncos.

Anders Carlson was called into action much more often than his older brother in the Green Bay Packers 38-20 win over the Chicago Bears.

Green Bay’s Mason Crosby replacement was also perfect, connecting on all 5 of his extra points and making his only field goal attempt from 52 yards away.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers cornerback Carlton Davis has been in the league since 2018, becoming one of the most successful Auburn alumni of the last decade.

He drew one of the hardest matchups in the NFL in week one, going up against the reining NFL offensive player of the year, Justin Jefferson and the Minnesota Vikings.

Jefferson got the best of Davis in the first half, collecting 7 receptions for 138 yards.

Davis and the rest of the Bucs secondary redeemed themselves in the second half, holding Jefferson to just 12 receiving yards and the Vikings to 71 yards through the air in the games final 30 minutes.

Tampa Bay would go on to win the game 20-17, with Davis making a key third down play in the late minutes of the fourth quarter,

Former Auburn captain and Carolina Panthers first-round pick Derrick Brown played a very good game in week one, shining light on an otherwise forgetful performance from Carolina.

Brown accumulated 9 total tackles on the afternoon, including this sack of Falcons quarterback Desmond Ridder.

nalysis/status/1701377592358810057?s=20Plays like this are why the Panthers used a top-10 pick on Brown, as he has the potential to become one of the best defensive players in the league.

We’ll see if he can string together some more big games as the season progresses.
